If you do not have the limitations of a tight budget its a no brainer. Buy the 450. If you don't want $6k worth of monthly payments on top of the cost of the parts to setup said 450r, keep the 400 and modify as neccesary.

I have to agree with flynbryan19. Keep in mind regardless of what you do to your 400ex, it will always be a 400ex! The aftermarket has spent countless hours on the 450R and performance aspects it already has built in! Just my opinion!

what style of riding do you do? do you mind doing a lot more maintenance?

look up some of my replies in similar threads...you'll see my opinion. i am not against a 450r, but i don't think it is right for every one...

ya there a lot more maintenance, i have seen countless 05-06 450r and yfz with blown motors. my ex still has the stock crank. its sad to think that a quad was bought after mine, rode- blown up and parted out while mine is still going. look at it this way your friends might be a little faster now but you will be faster and still riding when there quad is long gone. the ex is bullet proof and most of the probs you see are people with no experience trying to work on the motor.

I'm really not sure what to tell you. I love my EX. A few people on here have made the switch and then switched back so I know I'm not chancing it, not unless I shell out 10 grand for the new KTM 450 XC!

From wat i have read it sounds like a personal opinion. I ride alot of motocross and some trails on the weekends with the friends, and regular maintenance doesnt bother me, one of my friend has a place set up for that.

no they are the worst, there is some kind of crank mod or updated spacer for the crank bearing and it dont work to well. 1/2 of the pics i see of a 450r the motor is out but thats because its a no compromise race motor at a higher state of tune. there is a oil pump mod for the yzf that came factory after 07. the Ltr450 has transmission issues. many 07-08 already had to split the cases. the kfx is having its fair of no start new model bugs to be worked out. im not sure yet about the ktm they seem to be a quality bike. i just want to ride and not wrench or break down on the trail. my ex has never had a failure of any kind. i just cant see spending 7 g's on a quad that will be dun in 3 years. when times get better and i have the loot my next quad is going to be a hybrid ex with a r 6 engine. they redline at 14k rpm's and make triple digit power. if you race motocross you def need a 450 to compete.

Dang!! there is no other way to put that. KTM would be pretty sweet. I might just wait till after x-mas next year and then look into the 450 and bore mine out for now.

I'd just bore it out or do the hybrid.... The 400ex just feels just right no matter what type of riding your doing. ANd yes people do race them....
