View Full Version : The Diesel Thread

Well I figured I might as well make a thread just about diesel trucks instead of posting a new thread everytime I have a question.

I'm in the market to buy a used truck ... a diesel .... and to be quite honest I've never really followed up with the happenings in the diesel world , so I have no clue which models are good and what I should stay away from. I've never owned a diesel before either , but I figured with the kind of driving I do, a diesel will be beneficial.

Anyways ... some guys have given me their insight on the Ford 6.0L engines .... now I'm looking for information on how Chevrolet's 6.6L diesel is.

I'm exploring my options out there and came across a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD 6.6L diesel 4x4. It has very low miles for a diesel ( around 35 000 miles) .... so what's the low down on these engines. Anything to watch out for? Been many problems or are they a strong engine?

If anyone else has questions about diesels, post them in here... it'll keep the boards from being cluttered and we'll have all the information in one place.

I've had my chevy 2007 2500HD with the duramax for a year now, and I love it. I got it with 16,000 on it. Now at 32. No problems whatsoever. Its got all the power in the world, its quiet (if you want it to be), its comfortable, and it looks badass. :D

Also - if you have the money and your into it. The modifications on these things are incredible. You can do so much with the aftermarket products. Its just like modding a quad, but alot more expensive.

I have a 2007 2500hd classic with the 6.6 duramax. I got it with 18,000 on it and now it has 28,000 on it. The truck has more power then most people will ever need but if you get into it the possibilities are endless. They are extremely quiet and reliable. There are 2 motors that the 2006 could actually be. If its an early model in 2006 then it will be the LLY duramax with the 5 speed allison which is a very good motor/tranny combo. If it is the later 2006 (2006.5) it will have the LBZ motor with the 6 speed allison which is amazing. The LBZ is known as "the hot rod" of the diesel world. You truley don't know that you are driving a truck that weighs 8,000lbs. If you can find a used duramax jump on it because if you don't someone else will. Here is a pic of mine:

i have a 2001 6.6 duramax, original owner, and i have 182,000 miles now and the only problems ive had are the injecters in these had been recaled and they took a **** on me but gm put the newer ones in for free so no problem. and last year i had to put a water pump in. but with that kind of milage your going to have to do a few little things like that aventually. good luck.

i have a 03 f-250 with a 7.3L international and i love it, pushing 206,000 miles running strong. cant complaine. with the fords the front ends seem to have problems as far as ball joints, sway bars and links. i run a turbo back 4" aluminumized exhaust, k&n full intake and edge evolution programmer. gets decent fuel milage and 25% better when programmer is on. i wouldent buy a first year model of anything........6.4 duel turbo ford. not saying anything bad but they havent had enough time to work all the bugs out. i love mine and to each his own:p

I also have the an F-350 with a 7.3 powerstroke and have not had any problems with it.They are definately reliable.I have seen quite a few turbo and egr problems with the 6.0's but there are alot of them out there that haven't had problems too.
The 6.4 is a powerhouse but the fuel mileage is horrible on the ones I have seen.

As far as the duramax goes I know they had head gasket problems the first year or two but I don't hear of many problems after that.

i like strokes, but they dont quite run with smax, or cummins. I think the cummins are the kings of diesels, but its only my opinion. plus they sound sweet.

DON'T BUY A 6.0 FORD!!!!!!!!!!!

we have 7 of these, 4 2003's and 3 2005's and everyone of them has had severe problems since bought new. Injectors, turbos, PCMs, EGR coolers everything. No tranny problems yet and some are nearing 250000 miles. I believe the 6.0s were only made from 2003-2005, go figure

also beware of 01-03 duramaxs for their injector issues, GM extended the warrantys on them for 7yr 200000 but they just replace the bad injector with the same factory one w the crappy design.

They were made till 2007, take care of your stuff and maybe you wont have a problem. I have a 2006 and its been great. Everyone talks crap about the 6.0 but mine and my dads have been great we take very good care of our vehicles, and yes we tow and work our trucks.

Teh 6.0 was made all the way up until the release of the 6.4 in 2008............2 2006 6.0s here. Both have a crap load of mods and have around 50k on them and the only problem ive had is one of them has a little too much power for someone who dont know when to lift, I have had it in the body shop twice since Oct. haha

I am the maintenance man on these trucks, oil is changed every 5000 w rotella T, fuel filters every 15000 and trans every 30000 w mercon SP since bought new. Thats as perfect as u get.

I believe the problem is circled on the front! jk,,,,,i really like fords but the 6.0 has been nothing but trouble, same problems with all SEVEN of them. Never had the valve covers off our old 96 7.3 which had 390000 on it, just a tranny every 80000 miles.

Wish i was that lucky, round here they put the same junk back in.

I'm out of warranty anyway, and can change them myself but the injectors alone are pretty pricey.

Stay away from any ford, unless its the 7.3.

Straight down to the fact, cummins is THE best diesel out, whether you admit it or not. Fastest, most horse/tq, easiest to modify, best MPG, most reliable. Just the truck that is built around the engine could use some work.

A Duramax is just your average diesel. It will pull what you put behind it. You won't get as many miles out of it as other diesels, or as good MPG's. Much harder to make them as quick as cummins/PS.

I'm a huge mopar guy, and yes I drive a cummins. Without being brand biased I would no doubt get a 3rd gen Cummins with the 5.9. That 6.7 kinda ruined dodge.

I don't want to start a pissing match and before you think that I'm bashing Dodge or the Cummins I was actually going to buy a Cummins until I drove a Duramax. What are the hp/tq numbers on the Cummins? I know the LBZ Duramax (06-07) made 360hp/650tq. I could have sworn that the Cummins had 610tq and I'm not sure about the hp. Just by seat of the pants my Duramax would smoke my friend's old Cummins (got rid of it for a Duramax)..... well until 98 mph that is :( lol. Again not trying to start a pissing match just looking for the info.

I agree when i finally blow my 6.0 i am going for a cummins swap with allison tranny.

But my 6.0 has been great and it has 40k, just so all you guys know. I know plenty of people with 6.0s and they have been great for them. I think the later 6.0s 05-07 are more reliable.

haha ill agree the 5.9 Cummins is the best diesel out their followed closely by a 7.3 psd. BUT the Cummins is absolutely NOT the fastest. The Duramax LB7 i believe? is such a hotrod of a truck its unbelievable. or maybe its the lly or lbz? i dont know duramaxipads too well, but i know my buddy had i think an 05 or 06 with a crappy programmer, exhaust, and intake and it destroyed my buddys 24v cummins with a big turbo, big injectors, all the bolt ons, stacked chips etc etc.

I'm going to wait until my contract is renewed in August. If it is I'm going to be hunting a low mileage 06-07 LBZ Duramax down.

I'd buy a Dodge if there weren't so many other Dodge parts attached to that Cummins.

Ever since my last two Fords I swore I would never buy another one so F- anything is out of the question.

If only Toyota would sell a diesel here....

hmmm, I'll have to look into all that. I've never been beat by a duramax. Not sayin it couldnt happen though.

The Duramax should be faster then the cummins (V-8 vs inline 6 cylinder).. But then again, why do you buy a diesel? To street race or pull with? I liked my '03 Duramax until I moved up to a larger trailer.... lets just say that after it left me stranded, constantly overheated and had the tranny worked on 3 seperate times, I bought the 6.7 Cummins and haven't looked back. The LBZ duramax would be the ONLY other diesel I would look at besides the 6.7 cummins. I realize there have been issues with the new dodge, but 95% of them are related to how they are drove. If you are going to use your diesel as a daily driver DON'T buy any of the new ones with the updated EPA components.. just my $0.02 from experience.

My cousin had tons of problems with is duramax too and that was before he even had 30k on it.

I must agree, my buddies got an 04 6.0, had some minor issues but other than that nothing too bad. I'll tell you what I'm a cummins guy and this thing rips for a stroke.
