put my bike together runs and rides well been running for aprox ten minutes at a time full heat up and cool down ( heat cycles)for proper break in, anyways I noticed the headpipe was glowing red , does this mean I am way to lean? and if so I am interested in getting a complete jet kit any recomendations where I can get one on line?

I would guess you are quite lean. Any detonation? Whats the plug look like.

I run 180 main jet in mine. My head pipe has never been red. Is yours turning blue? If soo, it too lean and too hot!

Some food for thought... I got so hot, I skuffed my sleeve running the 175 main jet-to lean. The 180 works well and the 185 blubs.

When I get it back together with the head work and higher compression, I think the 185 might be a must... we'll see.

The headpipe on my 440 stroker glows red when I'm sitting at the gate but it is jetted right on. Check your plug to be sure your not too lean.

Mine glows like crazy.....I have a thin header, though - that's normal. Don't worry about it! :D

Here's a little test for you kids. Go out in the garage at night (make sure the garage door is open  ) Then start up your bike. If you got the revs steady about 1/2 throttle in the cold night your pipe will glow. Now your pipe is a pretty red color and you decide to keep blipping the throttle. The header will go back to normal color if you don't have a steady high rpm. Pretty fun also to piss off your neighbors at night if you got a t-4 silencer :devil ,You may be lean but if you aren’t then don't s hit yourself worrying about it!

440exnacsracer...

Very interusting, we had the same heat problem. I run 100 octane race gas and it still too hot and skuffed the sleeve.

I was prepared to buy a new sleeve/piston but I see you have a JE 89.5mm. I didn't know they made an oversize 89mm. Where did you get it and what is the compression ratio with it? This is great news... I was told by Wiseco that no piston manufacturer made a plus size 89mm. Is it ok too overbore the aftermarket sleeve? I sort of thought the big bore sleeves were junk if you needed a rebore.

Thanks, Steve.

When I had bought mine it had the JE 88.5mm and recently rebored it to a true 89mm ross.

I remember that Ross had an overbore for the 440 (89+mm) but dont rmember the size, but you can check out their site.

I dont think JE sells too many 440 pistons due to their deal with IMS/White Bro's so you may need to get the Ross.

Though I have never checked to see what color my header is at night it is not any more prone to color changes than when I first got it, and I am at sea level running a much smaller main that listed by the others

changed the needle position and bumped up the main, no more glow. not rich either

i would say your running lean

from what i understand, i too beleive your to lean my reasoning... my pipes have never glowed or even got really really blued, they were alway golden brown, then this weekend i rode in 15 deg weather for the first time, and they did glow slightly and turned very blue, from what i have read cold weather makes you leaner, and lean makes blue/glow, and if she weighs as much as a duck , shes a witch oops forget the last one

regarding 440ex in sig below, well after reading many threads on the issue , I just ordered (sp?)factory jet sizes kehin, pilot 40,42 main 160,165,170,175 bike has 155 and 38 pilot right now and is to lean I also want to have the option of playing with the jetting to switch from varouis set ups depending upon where I ride , weather and pipes, set up 1.lid off ,fmf pipe.set up 2. lid on stock pipe for muddy and state trails where they bust you for aftermarket pipe etc, winter , summer near as I can see I should have the jets required for any jetting sitution what do you guys think?

Go with the 42 pilot, 3 turns out on the mixture screw, raise the needle (stock needle) to the 4th groove from the top, I'd start with the 165 main with the lid installed, this should put you in the ballpark. A slight glow from the headpipe is not a problem but if it's bright add more fuel.. Check the plug for a light tan color at various throttle positions.
