I pulled the top end off my R and to me my rod has too much side to side play. Does anyone know the float each side is suppossed to have on the big end?? There is no up and down movement but it goes side to side quite a bit. It looks to me there is at least 1/16 of an inch on each side. I found a caliper yet so I can't measure it exactly.

I know there is supposed to be some side to side float but mine seems like it has a little much.

I guess if i get my motor out today I could probably tear it apart and look....how hard is it to get apart?

Its when you pull the cylinder off you are looking at the crank/rod assembly. Where the rod rides on the crank pin is where it is. There should be no up and down play but I thought it is okay to have some side to side float.

I would suggest running it by a good Honda shop and ask the mechanic what they think. You should concern yourself with up and down as well as twisting. Side to side is not as much of an indicator that the crank needs rebuilding.

it shouldn't have any up and down play but a little side to side is ok.

Normal side clearance is .010 - .020 in.

.040 in. max, like 2-R's said.

Dig up a set of feeler gauges and let us know what ya measure!

I bet its fine.

check the play with a feeler gauge.

The crank halves may have separated a little bit.

stock cranks are pressed together, thats why some people have them trued and welded.

Your most likely good to go.

maybe its because your moving the conn rod from the piston pin end of the rod and it seems like alot of play?

:o I think bee is right, I was checking the play from the top. It is well within clearence so I don't have a problem. I just got this crank not long ago, it was trued and welded when I got it. Thanks all:p

Stock clearance on a new crank is .016. Most crank rebuilders will run them at .016-.020. Anything over .030 will put excess pressure on your main bearings.

I didn't know the factory tolerence cause one of my buddies had my factory honda service manual(yes I was lucky enough to get one) but I got it back and everything checked out fine.

My local shop welds and trues every crank they sell cause it is really not that hard according to them and the benifits are well worth it.

I wouldn't be worried unless the side to side play seemed really bad. There should be some play, the Clymer maual says...

Crankshaft Big end radial runout .010-.022mm or .0004-.0009", wear limit is .04mm or .002".

Connecting rod big end side clearance is .20-.60mm or .010-.020", wear limit is 1.0mm or .040".
Good luck,
ERIC
