My friend has a 1998 banshee. just got the engine back a few weeks ago. it sputters at low rpms until he get up to a certain point up higher. it has full dmc pipes. we rebuilt the carbs but it did not help. he is running 280 main jets in his carbs. would it help to bump the jet size up to 300?

did you lower the needle clip to richen the mixture?
Try adjusting the needle clip 1 notch and see if it runs better or worse. If you make it richer and it runs worse then you're too rich and should try 260's.

turns out hes gonna need a new rebuild cranks beat. ripped the top end off and found metal shavings all in it and the left cylinder head is scored so hes in the market for buying a built up race engine or hes gonna build one himself

Doesn't necessarily mean the crank is bad. As long as the shavings aren't in the crank embedded in it somewhere, you're fine. Just replace the crank bearings and re-seal the case. Easy as cake.
If he's going to have someone build the engine for him, I HIGHLY recommend Passion Racing. He bored and honed my cylinders with a new wiesco top end kit. The bore was done with a PERFECT crosshatch and exactly on tolerance. He also cleaned the cylinders, polished the gasket surfaces, and polished the exhaust ports. All of this for I think $279. He's not the fastest ever but knows his crap.
He can build him a crazy 4mil engine that will run like a raped ape.
If your buddy rebuilds it himself, he should look into a hot rods +4 mill crank, and get the top end dune ported by passion. Noss head with 21cc domes (pump gas) and 28 mill carbs.

I've got a Passion 4mil, long rod, carbs, blah, blah, blah. Anyway it runs like a mother. Def worth the money. As long as you have the right supporting parts.
