I just picked up a basically brand new 2005 450r with less than 5 hours use. I was looking around for forums and came across one talking about the crank bearings failing on motors with as little as 5-10 hours... stated honda had an updated bearing/collar/ larger OD seal as a fix.

Is it a given that the stock 2005 bearings are going to fail prematurely and I should go ahead with this update before I do any damage? From the paperwork I have the quad was purchased in March of 2005.

I hope to be offering ceramic cranks bearings for 04/05 and 06+ 450R's within 60 days....

Ceramics are lighter and twice the strength as OEM steel radial bearings...

Until then, I would suggest you consider the HONDA crankshaft update retro kit...

Good luck.

Just keep an eye on shavings in your oil. i've seen some go out in a short time and some g o a couple years. But every 04 or 05 i've been around the crank bearing has gone out.
