This last weekend I bought a used 05 400ex. I haven't gotten a chance to take it out and ride it yet. So today i just rode it from the garage to the front yard to get some pics. When the motor is not running it is easy as pie to get into neutral, but when i try to shift into neurtral with the motor running i have a ***** of a time. I am trying to shift into neurtral without moving if it helps and yes i do use the clutch. But it is like their is no happy medium between 1st and second. Also it does want to creep a little with the clutch fully engaged. Can anyone help me with this? Is their a trick to hitting N or do I just need to get use to it? Sorry i am pretty new and am learning. Thanks a ton in advance

first thing to check is to see if your clutch needs adjusted...you should have about 10 mm of play at the lever...

Also remeber there are two adjusters one on the perch and one on the case. GL

I have about the 10mm of play at the levers and seems to really be a pain in the arse. It just doesn't make sense to me when the quad is not running it is easy as pie to shift gears from 1-2 and N. But when it is running and sitting still I can kick it down in to 1st and then even to go to 2nd I have to pull REALLY hard on the shifter. But when it does shift the motor doesn't kill or creep forward like the clutch is not engaging enough. I haven't tried to hit N while riding, but all the other shifting is nice and smooth and easy when riding. Am i being dumb or is something not right?

If you adjust the perch and cable and still having difficulties finding neutral, welcome to the club :D In all seriousness though, certain 400EX's are known to have this issue and there is no reasoning behind it. For example, my 400 is perfectly fine where my dad's is near impossible to find. Who knows. If you did a search on the issue, you'd come across multiple threads about the very same concern.

Don't be alarmed that something is wrong with your new toy. Enjoy the quad and be confident in your purchase decision. As others have said, it ends up being a "feel" thing that you will get used to.

Well heres my problem. Neutral is to easy to find. When the motor is hot and I try to rip up a sand dune in first accelerating fast and try to shift into second I catch netural. I damn near indo everytime this happens. Its the complete opposite of alanauclair's problem. Any ideas?

lol i have the same problem everytime i try to find neutral its a pain but when im ripping on it i seem to hit it almost everytime like its nothing. think everything is cake then sure enough back to not being able to get it when i stop again. it does take some getting used to. if all else fails use your hand lol. your hand can apply pressure with more feeling to know if your in nutral or not. my light stopped working and im too lazy to change the bulb so i just guess lol

yea the same things happen to me to.the easiest way to get into neutral for me is to just use my hand.

Try giving it a little shot on the throttle just as the shifter is coming up. Works for me.

I must be one of the lucky ones. Finding neutral on my 400 is pretty easy, both riding or at a stand still. However, for some crazy reason, if the quad is on a angle or slanted, its hard as hell to find neutral. Infact the other day I was riding down the train tracks which are slanted to one side, like the / key (not that extreme obviously, lol). I had to turn the thing off in gear, holding the clutch in. I could not find neutral, using my foot OR my hand. It was ridiculous. Took me like 3 minutes with my hand to finally find neutral.
