I just picked up a 06 trx450r without an engine and its missing a few little things, but i also have a 01 400ex with 440bb kit and was wondering how hard it was to swap the engine into the 450 frame if anyone has done this or has any advice it would be great thanks.

Screw that. Part out or sell the EX and find an engine for the 450.

Do you have a carb for the '06?

i agree. part out the 400ex and buy a motor and some aftermarket performance parts for the 450r motor.

I want to keep the 400ex and i want the 450r to be reliable im not a racer but the guy i bought the 450 from greanaded the engine and i think the 400ex engines are reliable i just need to know if the engine will fit with a lil bit of modding.and no there is no carb and it has no fan or overflow bottle and the thumb throttle is missing and engine mounts are gone but the rest of it is there.

I say go for it, there shouldn't be a lot of fabricating, just some lower motor mounts changed and some new front mounts and headstay.

You'll probably have to fab something up for the oil tank and cooler, you could even try to find a car oil cooler to put in place of the radiator.

If you are just a trail rider, you may want to consider selling the 400ex and getting a Z400 motor since its a trail motor and has liquid cooling. Otherwise I think it's a good idea since the 450 Motors seem to need rebuilding a lot. The 400 is kinda bullet proof.

Post some pics of it as you do it.

I don't think it'll be any harder than the 400ex, no doubt you'll have to cut off some mount on the bottom and make some new ones for the front and headstay.

Where is local to you? Is the Z400 a complete machine or just the motor? That's a good price for either.

I'm working on a Z400/ 250R hybrid.
