I took my newly done 416 out for some test riding today at my local spot (339th ave. & I-10). When I got there, there was a large group of people holding sand drags (approximately 150 yards of flat grated sand). Lucky me. I could now see how my new mods did. Unfortunately I did not have my paddles with me though. So I had to use my stock Otsu's. Which gave everybody with paddles a clear launch advantage. I lined up against a piped EX first. No contest, I killed it. He got me on the launch (he was using paddles), but I flew by him mid track. Next race was a piped Z400. Also on paddles. Same results. He got me on launch, but I passed him and pulled away around 2/3rds track. 3rd race was a stock Z400 on stock dunlops. I stuffed him out of the gate and never looked back. After these runs I was feeling pretty good. So I pulled out my Raptor and had my buddy (similar weight as me) run against me and a piped Banshee. All three bikes were on knobbies. I beat both bikes! At this point I figured that my buddy couldn't ride and we switched bikes. Me on my Raptor and him on my EX. Same results. My EX stomped my Raptor. So we raced a few more times with the same results every time. I did notice however that my Raptor was catching my EX after about 3/4 track. So in a longer run, my Raptor would overtake my EX. In a 300 yard run my Raptor would definately win. But not by a lot. So what do I think of my new mods? I'm stoked that a mere $300 could make such a difference in my EX. Best of all, It ran perfect all day. Merry Christmas Everybody!

Also on a side note. I did all these runs banging the stock limiter because my POS White Bros box croaked.

Now go out and get a carb:blah

The power you feel you got from them mods will seem to be doubled, just by adding a carb.

Torque and top end will rock.

Yep now go out and get a Carb and see what happens. You will really stomp them.

What kind of gas are you running? Im donw in tucson and want to do a high compression piston but dont know how much is to much for the hot summers we have here. I want to keep runing pump gas. Im probably am gunna do a 10.5:1 standard bore with the ex gaskets which should make my compression just over 10:1. Please give me any opinions of your about this. Im gunna through in a stage 1 hot cam with it.

Congrats on the kills!

Where did you buy your piston from. I havent decided je or ross yet, its gunna be whichever i can find cheaper.

I'm running super unleaded. When researching pistons, I noticed there wasn't much of a difference in price between the Ross and JE pistons. But the Ross was almost 20 grams lighter. I paid $125.00 directly from Ross. It looked very high quality and came with a great ring package. I couldn't be happier with it. I also used factory EX gaskets.

The piston kit was $125.00. And it came with the piston, rings, wristpin, and retainers.

The total mods were:
416 piston kit - $125.00
Cylinder boring and ring fitting - $40.00
Stage II Hotcam - $129.00
Factory Honda Head and base gasket - $29.00

Excellent gains for $323.00.

I've got the same curiousities. I've only seen one at the dunes and he wasn't willing to race anyone. How does the power compare to your EX?

I used a place called Shortblock Charlie's in Tempe. They do the machine work for most of the motorcycle dealers in town. They also did the machine work and port-n-polish job on my buddies 440. They're very fast too. I sent my jug to them thursday afternoon and got it back friday morning. They even spec'd out the ring package to make sure the ring gap was where it needed to be. I couldn't be more pleased with their service.

There was a guy on a predator and he raced a stock rapter and got beat then he raced a stock banshee and he got the jump on the banshee because the banshee was spinning so hard but then the banshee hooked up and passed him , then he raced a z400 and got smoked from take off to top end and the z appeared to be stock also. But he could have been a bad rider.

Would you happen to have their phone #. Also would they give you something if I say that you referred me?

Due to large volumn of business they do, a referral wouldn't do anything. I doubt they'd even remember me. Especially since I sent it through my work.

What constitutes excellent gains? 2-3bhp?

I've got an '02 400EX with no snorkle, and a WB E-Series slip on for functional gains, but ofcourse it isn't nearly enough. I was going to go order a jet kit in a few minutes, but found this post, which could change everything.

What do you recomend for someone with a $300 budget?

For $300 the setup he got would work awesome..

Ok, next questions (Thanks BTW)...

The 416 Piston Kit, who makes it? I think I saw a Wiesco piston for the 416 but wait, nope that was a 440 part I saw.

I would like help identifying the kit so I can get it, my dealer isn't the brightest. :(

I am fairly certain I saw the Hotcam in the catalog, and the gaskets are easy.

Thanks again!

Moto-man sells the piston and gaskets for $109. The Hotcams are like 139. Boring the cylinder and a book is like 50-70. That is about $300 and it should kick.

From what I've seen on this forum, my current setup should be somewhere in the 35-38 horsepower range. Or 7-10 horsepower over a bone stock EX.

Dang that's a good gain for only spending $300. How's the Clutch holding up?

How do I get a hold of Moto-man? Where is he located? I gotta have this done by next Thursday morning. I found a shop that could bore/hone in 1-2 days for $40.

I figure I got this weekend to tear the bike down. Are there any online resources that can show me motor tear-down, or am I going to have to wait for a book? I would just basically strip the plastics, the tank, exhaust then whatever it takes to get the top half the motor off, literally?!?!

Then, parts wont/can't really arrive till tuesday, but if I have the motor apart before then, I can take it to be bored to 87MM or what ever the new size (anyone know?) while I wait on parts, then I can reassemble when the parts arrive.

Whew, it's gonna be a fun next 7 days!

Thanks!!!

www.moto-man.com

87mm yes, but you need the piston there when getting it bored

i am thinking more like 32-35 hp but up to 12hp over stock in certain spots of the powerband

also facto in about 3 hours run time on break-in with several heat cycles, about a day all in all

Why do I need the piston first? It the new bore size not standard?

They have to have the piston and stuff to make sure the gaps are correct on the rings, etc.
