so i have the cases off the engine of my 400ex and i got them powder coated and i got to looking at the engine and stuff inside and i found the gear select lever and the gear that it goes with... now thers 1 down for 1st and then half up for neutral and then thers a place for 2,3,4,5 and then thers yet another spot for a gear... and i double checked to see if i counted wrong and sure enough thers a sixth gear possibility... anyone have any clue on if its possible and where to get it....??

could be where they stuck reverse on the newer models. It looks like they had it planned from they way they even designed the cases that a reverse would be added.

well now someone with a newer moter needs to pull it apart and see if a revers gear was thrown there lol

....im not sure if its the drum or wut its actually called but its the gear that the gear selector thing moves on when u make the shift... it moves onto what seems to me like a sproket and thers space ther for a 6th gear

and my friend with an xr400 took his off the same time i took mine off to powder coat his along with mine and he doesnt have a sixth gear.... i thought taht if it was a spot for reverse then it would be below 1st gear tho???isnt that how it is for the newer ones??

if someone could mod it to accept a 6th gear man i would buy one. That would be a real shockerbecausr you could have the low end power with the crazy top end speed.

my 1986 xl250r has six forward gears. It's way older but the engine looks visually similar.

That would be really nice to have. Sort of an overdrive for the 4hundy. I would consider buying a kit too. Steve

he is clearly full of a bunch of bs so i would just forget about it i think someone would have posted it by know if there was a easy way for 6th gear they have been out for like 10 years know.

02-09-2009, 08:54 PM
Never said it was going to be easy. you have to make a slimmer 5th gear set to share the space with the 6th gear.

the 6th gear possibility is bs. there is no space on the shift drum for a 6th gear although it is on the shift star. so if rebelrider says he has one it is bs. if there was a possibility of doin it u could sell the idea back to honda and make alot of money.

well im not sure what you guys are running but my buddies has 6th gear. im mean itll out run my brothers cousins cousin's banshee and i mean it does like 112 mph!!

i split the cases. i put in a 6th from a 84 v6 pinto "orange with a brown door" and all it took was a little shaving on a belt sander and a tweaking of the oil canuter valve. but... the cases wouldnt bolt back together so i used rvt and duct tape to seal it up. and man... it sure does run like a spotted butted ape now! :D

If he has not said anything in this long I do not believe him. I knew there was space for one but as far as I know no one has done it. i do not think the shift arm goes that far to accomodate the extra gear. Steve

are yall serious?? i thought i even added alittle bit to much just so yall'd know it was bs. i mean i held the cases together with duct tape and silicone.....

I used the gears off my bicycle so I have 24 gears. 24th is pretty steep but I can hit 240mph
