Im lost, my 86 r was running perfect then it just stops, I changed spark plug and it ran for am hour, then nothing, checked spark, no spark. I read the sticky for eletrical, sounded easy so I bought a multi meter, now I cant figure out how to measure ohms with it, any help would be great cause Im dumb with eletrical. What I want to know is where do I read ohms on thins thing or does it measure ohm.

ohms are the little horseshoe looking thing. It appears to be the whole left side there and you need to choose a range to work in.

How do I choose which range, starting from the bottom it reads 200 2k 20k 200k 2m and at the very bottom left side it has a picture of something that looks like sound

That means 0-whatever you select. If your looking to find a reading 200 or below, select 200 and so on and so forth.

Sorry, but do I put it on 200 or 200k, and thanks for the help. So If im trying to check the stator I would put it on 200k plug into the red wire and ground

I think I got it, I put it on 200k and barely got a reading, then I put it on 200 black/red to ground and I got a reading of 177, someone please tell me this is right, be nice to know my stator is good

With it on 200k the coil through the boot is 8.8 does this sound ok

Find out what the resistance(ohms) is supposed to be, according to the sticky and set the dial on the multimeter to the range you need.

200-200 ohms
2k-2,000 ohms
20k-20,000 ohms
and so on.

If the sticky says it should 456 ohms(just an example) set the dial to 2k.

Right, so I think I did the stator right, and the coil, went through all wires, checked motor to frame, only thing left is cdi( which I cant test) and the voltage regulator. Is there anyway to test the regulator, and can the bike run without it if I disconnect lights.

yeah everything checks out, except cdi and regulator, will the regulator keep it from running, my cdi is farely new

Every thing checked out, so It must be the CDI, so just for ****s ang giggles I took the CDI out of my 400ex and put it in. Got spark, then kicked it one time and she came to life, took her for a short ride and she was good, didt take her to far because I its not the 250r cdi. So I know the timing curve is different from the 400, but can I still use it.

You only need the regulator if your running lights. Thanx.
