Just picked up a 05' ltz400. I did a search first and I couldn't find an answer so here she goes.
I tried to adjust the chain by loosening the 4 bolts and turning the single bolt at the end clock wise, however, it will not turn any more. Does this mean it's at its maximum? So new chain? thx for the help.

That would depend if its an aftermarket chain or not. Possible too many links? Also, what are the sprocket sizes? Are they stock?

I'm not 100% sure but I think everything is stock.

1. Count the teeth on each sprocket, that will tell you if it is stock or not. 2. Take out one of the four bolts to see if all the adjustment has been used or if the nut is just frozen. 3. If there's no more adjustment, and the sprockets are stock, you'll most likely need a chain. If the sprockets are smaller than stock, remove some links. Either way you might want to put a new chain on if it's the stock chain it came with. That would make it about 4 years old.

Do I have to lift the real wheels off the ground to do the adjustment?

I had the same problem right after I got mine, and I just got a new chain. I got a new RK chain on ebay for $28 shipped. You dont have to lift the wheels off the ground, but it does make it easier.
