i believe hotcams is stamped on the cam. also it will tick louder than most stock 400's

your going to have to take your head cover off and get the # on it. thats the only way youll know for sure. but your going to have to find out eventually or else you can never adjust your valves.

You can also listen to the way the bike starts. Hotcams do not have a auto decompression mechanism which makes the starter spin slower due to the higher compression. The stock cam has a decompressor so the starter will spin quickly. If it doesn't sound like the starter is putting up a fight to get the bike going I would say it is a stock cam. I'm not sure if that makes any sense to you.

yep. the valve covers have to come off to see what came is in there. the gasket on there should be good enough to reuse. i have reused mine tons of time. its a metal one. also if it does leak i would just use some gasket sealer for a quick fix or to do it right get a new one.

you dont have to take the valve covers off.but the head cover gasket is metal.i had to replace mine cause it had something else in there but if your careful it should be fine.

ok. he wants to know what cams in there. so i mean i may be stupid but the cover with the rockers is a valve cover right? there isn't anything clear for him to see in there for the cam. so obviously he has to take the cover off to see the cam.

if you send me the cam I would be glad to try it out and let you know if its a hotcam haha. If you dont want to open it up just see if it ticks really loud. If you open it up and the cam doesnt have the decomp. mech. then you know its not stock.

honestly it doesn't take 15 minutes to see if its a hotcam. plastics off then gas tank and i think 12 bolts and your in then just readjust valves when your done and hopefully you will like what u see.haha

take the 10mm head bolt out of the center of the valve cover

and the long bars that run through the top of the cover. then if it still doesn't want to come off which is logical since its been on there forever. get a hammer or a rubber mallet if you have one and tap on all 4 corners then it should want to come off. you will lose a little bit of oil but not much. so be ready to catch it with a drain pan or old grease rags.

the valve covers are the 4 things you can take off to adjust the valves.the head cover is the whole top thing with the 4 valve adjuster holes.

Since we are on the subject of cams and adjusting the valves, what is the proper valve clearance? Thanks

turn the motor over counter clockwise through the center hole in the middle of the left crankcase with a 17mm sprocket and see if theres any writing on it mine hot cams stamped on it.

stock valve settings are .10mm intake and .12mm exhaust.

yea hotcams should be stamped on it somewhere. just keep turning it over until you see it. if you don't see it then it could be another aftermarket cam or stock one.

Don't torque the cam cover bolts to the 10 ft. lbs. the manual says. They snap and could be a nightmare for you. Just tighten them down snug and call it good it won't leak.

theres 4 caps on the head cover you take off and its right under there.then you lossen the locknut a little with a wrench and decrease increase valve clearance with a screwdriver.your going to have to get a feeler gauge and put it between the subrocker arm and the adjusting screw.get it so it fits snug. then tighten the locknut. just make sure its at tdc and you should be good.
