I have used stovk and after market 400ex arms on my 250r's in the past
Currently I even have a set of chrome +2 arms ( burguard I think)
and woks shocks from a 400ex, that whaere on a 250r I bought.

400ex Stem WILL NOT WORK !!!!!!
the spacers are a washer on each side where the a arm bolts to the frame the 250r mounts are a little wider than the 400ex spacers take up the slop
I have a few 250r stems if you need one

A 400ex stem will work. Im running a houser +1+1 in my 250r currently. The steering stop on the frame is on the opposite side on the 250r stem. with a little grinding on the stem, you can acheive full steering on both sides. I have used both a stock 250r stem, stock 400ex stem, Burguard 250r, and now a Houser 400ex stem all in the 88 250r frame

what has to be done to 400ex arms exactly

Nothing has to be done to the 400ex a-arms. basically the 400ex are are narrower at the pivot bolt. So when you put them on the 250r, you have to use some washer 's or some other spacer on either side of the arm to make up the extra space.

I just installed a 400ex stem on my R tonight. It is definitely a little shorter stem. I had to get rid of the stop that is tacked on to the upper part of the stem that keeps it from coming up through the stem stay. I lengthened mine, but it is mostly a bolt in.
