i like my 86..because thats what i came across.I do like the aluminum swingers on the later models..they are lighter than steel ones.Losing weight is the same as adding hp;)

R's rock no matter what year, build em how you want em, best bike ever hands down

the 88-89's are better out of the box but a little work there all good The 88-89 have a lighter shorter swinger and a diff port setup and a long rod motor

the 89 250r had a clutch update, tranny update which really helped a lot, a shorter swinger, lighter frame, and something with the front spindles. But i actually like the 86 frame better. What you can do to get rid of that stock swinger is get a aftermarkey one or get a 450r or 400ex one and bolt it in the R frame.

I love my 89, my buddy used to have an 86 and i rode it a few times and it just felt alot different then my 89 and they were set up pretty much the same. I think the aluminum swinger definately made a big improvement over the handling its easier to whip around corners.

Thanks,
Mike

yes, the 85 are the thickest engine cases, 86/87 were alittle slimmer and 88/89 were the most slim. 85 and some 86 had some issues with cracking of the cylinder.
