is there other things to do when i change the cam?
more performance and reliability?

for reliability you can put a crf450 timing chain in there. theres not a whole lot more you can do unless you go deeper into the motor. you can also put some new valves/springs in there to make it more reliable but it costs a ton of money.

Does your buddy have a high-compression piston?

If he doesn't it he can and will lose some power on the bottom end and probably mid-range. Aftermarket cams have a longer duration the valves stay open. This causes a loss in compression and lost power. So say the 400ex is 9.1:1, the cam WITHOUT a high compression piston will make it roughly 7.1:1

I can't believe no one mentioned this yet..

Modern 450's can get away with it because they're high compression to begin with. But the 400ex is fairly low compression stock and the cam will make it worse.

You can always buy it to re-sell it though:devil:

Yeah, I definately wouldn't put a stage 2 hotcam in a 400ex with stock compression. I put one in my 450r with 12:1 compression and the loss on low end power was noticable. I'll be using a 14:1 piston to make up for the difference, so if I still had a 400ex I would use at least use an 11:1 piston.
