I am propsosing something to a company that can make rad shrouds for the front of the DS450, much like the factory shrouds that no one can get.

How many people would be interested if these front shrouds could be made? They would be aluminum as I dont think Carbon Fiber will hold up to roost or branches or much else directly hitting it.

Let me know so I can give this company some numbers to work with.

I would I was thinking of making some myself....I did talk to the EPIC mechanic last week about them and he said they increase flow and block mud both.....seems to be some confusion about that.....

Anyway, can you post a diagram of what your proposing?

when you talk to em you should see if they can make them so they can still stop mud but the outside fin you should make stick out farther for more airflow.

im assuming we are talking about something like what the yamaha 450Rs have? like scoops? i think they look cool id be interested

Good point Joey and angle the fins backward large in back to increase velocity....I can build a professional dwg if you want and email to you. Or if you want to do it I will help you any way I can. Do you have Autocad or CATIA?

Next week Ill see if I can calculate how much vane depth we need to get air flow, something I had plan on doing anyway...

Hotshot you got some photos of that?

If we work together on this I bet we can come up with a design better than the race teams. :D

I check last week and BRP does not offer the louvers and this radiator needs all the help it can get..

Im talking out my overflow tank out since it is too close to the engine, just not sure how to make it work yet w/no pressure/filler cap.

if you look at this picture you can see the scoops under the fender on the sides of the radiator. is this what you guys are talking about?

nope. It's basically like the fins used on dirtbike radiators mounted on the Ds450 radiator.

Does anyone have any idea of how much it would cost if they make them?

ya something that you can keep on the quad all the time and not worry about it stopping airflow and overheating, you should make a prototype n if it works good ill buy one from you. no i dnt have either of those

I am not getting much feedback for this but I was looking at the current set up, it seems if there was a guard that started at the very tip of the plastic and angled downward and back towards the rear it would give an angle that would assists with self cleaning and enough space to keep air circulating if it begins to get packed up.

Yamaha tilted their radiator on the 06-up YFZ's to assist with this very issue, TNT... what do you think?

Can you post a pic of the 06 YAM, I got a 05. Let me think about it and look at the DS later today. Good idea maybe. You know if you take a frontal view of the DS there is not alow of opening for roost so this guard may work. I was thinking the same thing by just using a screen or two. I would think most will come from being roosted, maybe some from the front tires.

I dont have a pic of the 06 YFZ but...

Lokking at the side profile of the quad, the top of the radiator is angled more towards the front of the quad and the bottom is angled towards the rear, this was done to help assist with the rad clogging.

While we cant move our rads on the DS, we could have a guard that angles from the very tip of the nose, down, and back towards the bottom of the rad where the single bolt is, this might be enough of an angle to help promote self cleaning of the guard that is made, I am thinking something like

or

And having this material swept back on the left and right sides from the tip of the nose angled back on each side

I'm going to test this screen I got off our YAM....I just zip tied it on real fast to see, I’m rebuilding my quad but it will look and be installed better and painted if it works. I am blackening this quad out the yellow grill with be black as the whole front end....I now have two screen walls and I can bond two more on the outer and inner(stock) screens(behind them), fine screen like on a home screen door....and I don’t obstruct air flow much at all!

I can’t see anything but sand getting through all that and it will go right through the radiator fins. I won't have a limp or temp modes so I think I will be all right, if I can keep my coolant temp around 250 F which is where the system limits the revs to 7,000....that’s conservative since the aluminum can take 500 F, the gaskets(head and seat), and seals are more of a concern....I'm adding heat reflective tape to my over flow, I may go to a bigger radiator and get rid of it if I cant keep my coolant temp down..

Be careful about adding weight to the front of the quad the more weight you add around the center of gravity the less handling...I know you know this Blizzard but for those that don't, picture holding weights on a bar standing up and rotate it around,, the more weight and the further it is away the harder it is to maneuver.

Plastic works great here this peice is five years old and been hit by rocks, etc, , it's strong, light, has good impact strength, it's cheap, so if you can find something that works use it. I think this piece is stock 04/05 YAM or from PWR I can’t remember but can find out when my son gets back from the INDY show. We'll be putting our quad together and testing this in a few weeks.

My 09 radiator angles back at top about 30 degrees so that will help.

You can see my Precision Stabilizer installation here I am using heat tape on it too since it is the heat flow from the radiator. The mounting bracket needs it since it will transfer heat to the oil body....

Our YAM we never had a problem and it’s open to mud...

But yes Blizzard I think your idea is worthy of a try.
