I got a used Honda 400EX and I was wondering how to know if I need to adjust my valves?

It does not smoke and it runs great, there is not a noticeable tick and everything sounds ok so should I go ahead and do it or wait for it to start ticking?

all honda's have a slight tick to them. when mine needed adjusted they would tick at first start up and quit after 2-5mins of running

Mine ticks a little after i have been on it for a good 20min. It really ticked before when i had the Stage 2 hotcam in my old 440 motor.

the timing might be off or the chain may be stretched.

Mines an 05 and it ticks but not crazy loud or anything. I've always thought they had a little ticking...

yea if its an 05 its probably not stretched a little ticking is normal.try adjusting your valves and see if that does anything.mines been ticking for like a year now but i found out the previous owner didnt know what he was doing and the timing was off.

yes mine ticks all the time its just something that all honda's do. my 02 honda foreman 600 has the slight tick to it also. when mine needed adjusted it had the normal tick but when just idling(when cold) you can hear a louder tick then if you would rev it or when the engine was warmed up that louder tick would go away but the normal one was still there. i thought i had a video of it but cant find it. if i do ill post it up so you know what im talking about

mine ticks, we thought it was the valves but we checked the chain first and the timing is off. and its streched, ive heard its kinda common. so i got a CRF450R timing chain for abour 37 dollars. :D

Mine just ticks when idleing... When i was riding without a helmet, I noticed you can hear a loud vibrating pinging noise just right before you hit the rev limiter in 1st and 2nd gear.
