What is HDR?
The acronym HDR stands for High Dynamic Range. In Adobe's implementation within Photoshop CS2 this is accomplished by using a series of photographs which one takes in the same manner as with previous blending techniques, and then using floating point 32 bit (per channel) math, merging these files automatically into one huge high dynamic range image.
HDR (High Dynamic Range) is basically merging 3 or more pictures (1 under exposed, 1 normal exposure, 1 over exposed) into one, by using digital photo editing sofware, photoshop, photomatix, etc, to truely be able to see all of the highlights and shadows that you would not be able to see in just 1 picture.

Almost all monitors, and other ways of displaying the HDR images have a limited dynamic range, so you have to convert the image into a viewable format called "tone mapping". pretty much a way to tap into how the human eye see's a scene, all of the dynamic range, while retaining a realalistic color and contrast.

this is one way of editing digital pictures. but my pictures are 3 image and tone mapped.

For more info google HDR photographs:

Here is a couple pic's that my son has done. he says good sun light helps out the overall effect of the picture. Will post up some more of his 450r when the weather gets better.

PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS AND POST UP SOME OF YOUR HDR PIC'S

So bacicly its mutiple shots that you blend togather with photoshop?

Pappy
01-28-2009, 01:08 PM
You cant actually see a true HDR image on todays monitors, they just arent capable of it. However the effect of exposure blending that most call HDR is actually tone mapping.

www.hdrsoft.com I believe they offer a free trail download as well as others.

It works best when you actually have a scene that offers a high dynamic range of light.

I've played with the program but havent done much with it.

To get the full effect of the process, you need a wide range of light, and use multiple exposures. Ive seen up to 10 exposures merged. Then you play with the sliders to get the effect you want. Halo's are generally frowned upon around objects, and some (like me) prefer it to look really natural but some of the wilder photos i've seen are intense.

Lately i've seen several good shots done using 1 raw file, but it still usually takes multiple exposures to capture the gamut of light needed.

My favorites are usually the ones done on the beach

This one isnt the best but it shows what it can do. I will try and find some that are just plain outstanding. (This is NOT my picture)

how much do you over expose and under expose

Pappy
01-28-2009, 08:52 PM
Start by doing a full stop over and under, you can even do several stops over/under etc then try using different numbers of images for differing effects.

start -1 0 +1

or -2 -1 0 +1 +2

Its like anything, if you go ahead and do a -2 and +2 you will have them if needed.

pAppy you sir are correct, seems like you know a thing or two about HDR, and photography all together. im mak400ex's son, the one who taking all the pics, ive had my camera (Olympus E-510) for about a year or so now, still relatively new to the world of photography. not really new to the world of photoshop and photo editing software though. so that helps. but you should post up some of your pictures man, id love to see them.

here are a few more of mine,

all together i've probably only done aobut 10-15 hdr images. so im still learning! :macho

No style here, pretty straight forward photography

Here is an image i tone mapped from sunday. It was a grab shot of a friend of mine hunkered down in a blind as he was taking pictures of ducks. I missed the ducks asthey flew in front of him and really did not take the time to make the best exposure I could as I just happened to see the ducks heading hsi way and it was a snap judgement to shoot.

By tone mapping, I was able to pull in the highlights and make a decent image for his memory book:p It was in the teens with a stout wind so I wasnt worrying much about being perfect!

that is really awesome! now i have to give it a try. I have Photoshop cs3 extended, and i can get access to my brother Nikon d80. both of those should work for the shot, right? and anyone mind explaining in detail what i need to do with the camera? i dont know how to use the hi-tech camera yet. the photoshop part i can figure out on my own.

mak400ex
01-29-2009, 01:15 PM
basically like pappy already stated set your exposure or stops to something like (+1) (0) (-1) or look up for your camera like exposure bracketing. idk about nikons but my camera already has a setting to where it automatically takes a +1, 0 and -1 in 3 clicks.

from there just open CS3, which is what i use, open file, automate, merge to hdr. from the browse for the 3 (or more) pictures, click open, then automate. go order a pizza and sit back and watch the game, then hopefully it will be done, then the window will pop up of what it will look like, be sure you convert it to 16bit before clicking ok. then your all done! :bandit:

Here is one from Quadfest. If you get ATVrider magazine you might have seen it. This is an example of using it without it making the effect stand out. It wasnt HDR'd for teh magazine, infact I havent even seen it in print so I dunno what they did with it.

No, it has to do with the range of light in the image. Trying to HDR an image with flat lighting is like a cute chick with no tits.....no matter how hard you try you just arent going to get anything more then what you got no matter how much you play with them..it...lol

Just think High Dynamic Range (in other words...bright and shadow or light and dark) You can run the process over other shots and im sure there are ways to bring out something cool.....BUT...its usually best to think about the shot and what you intend to do with it, that way 1/2 your battle is won

Flat as in even lighting void of neither highlights or shadows. To make the HDR effect come out, you really need a photo of a scene that has a very broad spectrum of lights and darks (highlights and shadows) or something in the image that makes the effect stand out.

Here is one I did a few weeks ago. It was my first attempt and I use the free trial of photoatrix. I brackted this shot with +2 0 -2. I believe you can produce the same effect but more natural using a graduated neutral density filter?

Using a ND filter usually is used to knock down the bright sky (or brightest part of teh image) so that a more balanced photo can be made. Even film has a hard time with some of the scale of light that is around us everyday. We also use them to darken a scene so we can use a slower shutter speed for varying effects.

Exposure blending, HDR, and other forms of image manipulation all have thier place. Its knowing when to apply them or how to shoot for the effect that matters most.

Paul, that cake is all gone:D

So using a ND or GND filter wouldn't give you the full range of light like using the HDR process? I was thinking about picking up a ND filter and just playing with it to see what would happen but haven't done so yet.

Pappy
01-30-2009, 03:23 PM
Imagine the picture you posted above....

The GND filter is available in stops of light (-1 -2 -3 might be available in even darker)

To expose for the bright sunset, the foreground would go dark...probably almost black in your pic. By using the GND you could cut down the distance between the dark and bright and balance the image. You wont get it perfect always but they can and do help alot with this type of image, although with the foreground being so dark and light fading fast you would be pressed to nail it perfect but you could get really close. With anything, the addition of teh filter would or could harm the highlights and some of the minute colors. As long as you were real close on your exposure, you could bring them back out with PS or other editing software

ND - Nuetral Density

GND - Graduated Nuetral Density

They are filters that vary the amount of light that enters your lens.

It works best when you actually have a scene that offers a high dynamic range of light.

TY! now i can take my photography to a whole new level :) thanks for the link, downloaded the trial and got a serial from rapidlibrary dot com
