Guys, i need some help. I am looking to get my boy a new bike. i really like the typhoons. there is a genuine typhoon 90 for sale here for 800, or there is a baja 125 for like 600-650. money is tight right now, but these are prices that i couldnt pass up. He is only 5 (but he's been on a 50cc for 3 years) and i dont think he needs a 125 yet, but if i went the baja route, i could probably get him some paddles with it. is the Typhoon really that much of a better bike? thanks!

I would say it depends on what you're going to do with it. Trail ride, MX, open field, etc... When I got my sons bike I got the Typhoon 125 because
1). It was something I knew he'd grow into and ride for a few years.
2). He could trailride, MX, fieldride, flat track, etc... with the bike.
3). Parts, warranty, a dealer or the main shop that I could call and talk to someone if I had problems.
4). The availability to upgrades and how the bike would hold up to such.
I spent $700 more for the Xtreme than I would have a Baja and have gotten everything out of my four reasons above. Don't get me wrong, I've had some small issues with the Typhoon and have had to mod some things to make the bike better overall. Do research on both bikes and figure out what it is he's going to be doing.

i got my son the baja 125 when he was five, now he is seven. he races flat track/tt. the bike is still stock form. he is second in points in one class and third in another. there is typhoons and ssr's in his class with him. the only issue we had is that the shift drum broke. i called baja in arizona and was able to get the part i needed and a whole gasket kit sent to me for $35, two day air. i have heard that extreme is harder to get parts for but i dont know. i would say baja, nothing but good things to say about them here

Hasn't been hard to get parts for me ;) . Head kit, clutches, springs, cylinder, pistons, crank, CDI, etc... All these parts I got from pitbike dealers online. The Xtreme motor can use parts from GPX, TRX, CRF, Lifan, and Thumpstar engines. And these are quality race parts from Professional Pitbike manufacturers. Here are just a few...

Look under each of the quads. See if the extreme has the rear brace that is added on the newer models. I am pretty sure the baja doesn't but check it too. If the two are the same with or without, buy the baja. Extreme's seem to have some crank issues that usually force the owner to purchase an aftermarket engine. Yes other manufacturers do make parts that will work for the engine, lots in fact, but if you need an extreme brand part from them, it is liable to take a while. I would also check the swingarm design, especially where the axle carrier is housed. Make sure they are the same design. Some of the cheaper versions of the extreme have a cheesey design. Otherwise, if the quads are identical outside of the engine, save the extra dough buying the baja and upgrade the engine as necessary. All the aftermarket extreme parts will most likely work on the baja. Only the people who have already spent money on "xtreme" name, say buy it for the tranny. I don't know why when 80percent of owners claim crank failures have plagued their machines. I know that Ride1Rob seems to have had great luck with his as I am sure many do. It is also possible that all the people who have had great luck have had no reason to bring up the issue so it just seems like most are unhappy. Regardless, I just recently purchased a replica extreme with the intention of upgrading the entire engine when the time comes if the tranny on this one turns out to be garbage, so be it. I paid 1500 brand new to my door for a 125. It has mikuni carb four speed cr engine design and has all the exact components. Orange plastic, chrome arms, same everything and came with all the new mods including the main frame brace installed. I have priced the engines on several sites and am pretty sure I could buy a couple nice ones complete before I reach the price of the brand "xtreme". To each his own though. I hope whichever you decide you have good luck and your kid has a blast, afterall that is the main thing. All that said the xtreme style quad is a great bang for your buck and is a great buy for those of us who aren't rich but would like to give our kids a chance to try racing.

Guys, i appreciate all the feedback. i have been searching for info the last few days. Today i decided to go with the extreme, so i called him and asked if he could meet me somewhere. I still havent heard from the guy. Maybe he doesnt like cash:rolleyes: So i may end up with the baja, which doesnt sound like a bad idea at all. The baja has only been ridden a handful of times, and is only 6 months old. Should it come with a mikuni? what kind of safety stuff do they come with (ie throttle limiters, kill tether, etc) as i think he'll need some time to adjust going from a 50 to a 125.

Both quads should have a throttle stop screw on the thumb switch. Screw it in to reduce throttle or out to increase. Also, it is a shifter so high speeds can be avoided by not shifting into the highest gear. If all else fails you can tinker with the gearing to bring the top speed down to a more comfortable level.

well guys i shot myself in the foot the other day. just hours after i wrote my last post i was pushing my sons baja up on the trailer and the back wheels locked up. come to find out one of the tranny gears lost a tooth and it was getting in a bind. so after a couple of days of thinking i decided to call vince at tboltusa, super nice guy, and i ordered the xy140.
before anyone says anything about should have bought an extreme, check the front of the frame of a baja. they are all 06 extremes that have been relabeled with another tag by baja on the other side. they are the old engine design with a single clutch instead of the dual clutch that is at fault for the crank problems. that info comes from baja motorsports in arizona to me, not something i read in a forum, and i can take the pics to prove.
as soon as i get the new engine in and going i will post pics of this flattrack tt racer. not tryin to make a stink. i would like to thank everyone on here for being so candid and honest

At least you were honest Asohogan. The Typhoons & Baja's are nice bikes. The Baja's seem to be the old style 06 Typhoons that had quite a bit of issues. I know they had issues with the tranny and corrected them. As far as I know nothing has been done about the cranks. Regardless if Jams crank holds up this season or not, in the end the crank will be a paper weight.

i have my baja for about two year now, I put a 143cc kit on the stock motor it has hold up very well just the clutch slips a little at low rpms in 4 gear. MY son don't like the shift that much! one thing that i did is take off shifter arm off that pushes the clutch plates in when shifting . It shift with easy ! whttp://i93.photobucket.com/albums/l79/quadinfamily/DSCF2015.jpg

Lilman is riding :eek2: lol. Tell him great job! I was also thinking about taking that shift arm off but I figured he wouldn't be able to hold the shift lever up and get the revs up for his starts. When I adjust it out the bike rolls on his starts.
