ok so heres how it goes. im having no luck trying to sell my ex http://www.exriders.com/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=378524 to upgrade to a 450r for this season. im practically gonna have to give it away so anyway, my question is how much difference has it made for you all who have had your head ported and polished. i currently am running a 440 12.5:1 pistion with stage 3 cam shaft. other than that its stock. any feedback would be greatly appreciated. its getting down to crunch time to decide if im gona sell it or build up the motor even more and try to get it a lil more competitive with the 450s

im open to any suggestions on what you guys have done to get this motor going! Timing keys, bigger vavles, ect. I dont really understand what both of those mods do so an explination would be awesome. Thanks guys

i dont think a key would really make a difference for you since you already got a 440.i think the biggest thing you could do to get more power is get the 450r carb.

Head porting/polishing, if done right, will add a very nice bit of power you will feel. I suggest Trinity Racing as they did my head and it came out beautiful. The engine I put it on was a 426, 11:1, stage 2 cammed, 450 carb, full Yoshi exhaust and it was crazy fast.

how much did trinity charge?? and seems like alota people swear by the 450r carb, im just not sold on it. Does it really make a difference???

and more imput people on the heads, im curious as he** as to what a ported head does to these 400s

For their stage 4 job it was right at $600. That included the dis assembly, port/polish, new valve seals, valve job and re assembly. If you do the dis assembly and just send them your head it'll be a lot cheaper. The 450r carb is a great mod. Especially on a built engine.

My 416 puts down 37hp, i think the p&p has a lot to do with it, considering its only a 416. Its definitely faster than the 440 i had before. My mods are in my sig

Yep i would say, and i have heard from others, that the most bang for the buck perrformance upgrade is the 450r carb.

i put a p&p'd head on and did my 450r carb at the same time and the power difference was unbelievable. 450r carb made major diff, throttle response and rev are soo much quicker. totally worth every penny.

the dirtbike carbs are fcr and much different than the 04-05 NON fcr 450r carbs. You can get a fcr to fit but the honda ones are really tall and I would imagine theres fitment issues which is why most use the yfz carb

yea definately issues getting it to fit..it is really tall. im convinced i cant use it. soo what is the main difference between the 04-05 model card and the 06-08? i will probably end up getting one

So what year and quad/dirt bike is the best to look for when getting a 450r carb. A lot of people talk about the carb but no one ever really gives specifics on which car to use.

04-05 trx 450r carb, it is not the FCR that was introduced in 06

check the sticky on the top it will explain everything. your trying to race 450's and you dont know nothing about the 450r carb. LOL !?!?

Since you already have a 440 and high comp you need you engine to breathe. You didnt say anything about the obvious filter and exhaust but you will need if you dont have. Stock 400ex flows pretty good but with the 440 on it you will need more flow to get its full potential.

yes exactly, that is what i wanted to say but was in to much shock. you got a big bore and a stage 3 cam with a stock carb you are killing your top end. right as that cam is coming in your carb is giving up.
that baby wants to breath, let her RUN........

your going to lose to much money liquidating your quad like that.
i got a brand new 04-05 450r carb off ebay for $50 it took a couple of tries. sometimes they went over $100 but i got a deal. also servicehonda.com sold them for $160 new!!!

lol easy easy guys, im runnin open air box, no toil filter, full lrd exhaust, and yes 440 12.5:1 stage 3 hotcam, also didnt mention have a custom curved cdi box from duncan racing. and no i dont know a thing about the carb and have raced locally very succesfully against 450s with the stock carb... so your saying its holding me back??? im just ignorant to this topic

and sc400 very brave and very fast haha

ya i think it is. you got an upper rpm camshaft and a +4MM piston that increases your cylinder volume alot. you need to compensate for it, the stock carb cant flow enough. the stock carb is 35MM the 450r carb is 42MM. your parts should all be matched to make a good engine package. also a good "hog it out" porting job will give you 3+ more peak horsepower and the 450r carb is worth 2-3 horsepower on the dyno. i have dyno sheets if you want to see. if you think your quad is fast now wait till you get it ported and put that carb on.
