I am going to replace my CDI unit, I have done some research and do not want the CR 250 ignition. any sugestions, and can I advance the timeing on the stock stator by ovaling out the holes, if so , any advantage, and will jetting need to be changed?

Dynatek has worked for me for over two years with no problems.
MSD also makes a complete set-up for the 250r.

the programmable model dyna is a POS. Had 3 die in one year. They don't make any more, so warranty is out of the question.

Their non programmable is nothing more than the 88-89 curve, so you wont gain anything.

The problem with the stock ignition system is retarding the initial timing enough to kick it over easy for starting. The stator doesn't generate enough spark below 800 rpm.

So if you retard the initial, you loose the advance on the top end. If you advance the initial, it makes it hard to start.

look into the following:

MSD
Vortex
PVL
ESR CR Type

Now what would be the best is if Ricky made a CR stator with a lighting circuit, then add the Vortex programmable with "on the fly" rider adjustability.

Wow!! that vortec is $449 from DRI. I need my lights, I think I will go with the stock 88-89, can I get my stator redone to a 200 watt for more lights. Is the dynatek non programable good as stock, I ask cause it is $60.00 cheaper.

what lights are you going to run ?

HID's require less power. Your stock stator will handle 55 watt halogens all day long.

I have 2 non-progammable DYNA's still running after 3 years. No issues what so ever.

I would personally look for a OEM CDI tho....

I have 2 trail tech 35w/ light I would like to add 2 more. I thought 2 35w lights was the limit for the stock stator.

if you are looking for a vortex but don't want to spend the big $ let me know I may part with the one I have.

I don't think you would take what I would be willing to pay. lol
