Im rebuilding my brothers 440ex and i just received the top end gasket kit and the head gasket is a three piece cometic, we are trying to get the compression up and i was wondering if i could split the gasket and just use one piece of it, i know thats a trick for the stock 250r gasket but i was wondering if anyone has done that before? we would coat it with copper coat to help it seal but will that work? Thanks for any input.

The cometic 3 piece is already thinner than most. I would not take a layer out, it will most likely leak.
You could run without a base gasket and use hi temp silicone there. If you do I would say it is a must to check your piston clearence with plasti-guage to ensure a proper deck height. Do not go less than .040"
