you have to hit them with a hammer, ahh ,but were to hit?

do not hit the joint do not hit the threads . you want to hit
on the edge of the flat stock of the arm at the point were the hole is ,you may have to whack it several times but it will make it come out. i can get a pick if you need it.

You could put the castle nut back on loosely and thread it down until its flush with the thread and take a hammer an whack it. Usually they will pop out and you don't damage your threads.

the problem with hitting the castle nut is they are weak and more then likely bend or break at the top tabs......good idea but use a standard nut that is the right size, but hitting the spindle is the way to go

Yea, I can see that could be a problem, but as long as you hit it dead on,it shouldn't be an issue.

its also the way to go if the spindles are coated(powder)

LOL, no powdercoat here. I bend the spindle too often to even remotely think of powdercoating something like that.
I did try a blow hammer yesterday with success on my right spindle;)
