z400 chain/sprocket allignment issues

My dad has a z400 and is putting new chain and sprockets on it. He went down to a 13 on the front and a 39 in the back. When we try to put the new chain on it's impossible to line up the correct links and cut it in order to put the master link in. Are there just some sprocket combo's that physically don't work with each other?

you need to slide rear adjuster to the link start with axle carrier all the way up towards motor then slide to fit.loosen bolt to adjuster two in back 4 on top or 2on top then slide the entire axle and carrier towards(inswingarm) motor,I would loosen bolts then get behind rear on ground and grab sub-frame or something and push with legs till it went all the way to top.
