I pretty much only ride in the sand and somtimes on trails. My question is do the 450r shocks make a big difference over the stock shocks on a 400ex?

you don't need the 450r shocks if you trail riding. idk bout dunes though i would say you might as well. they are a day and night difference if you love to jump!! i race xc and ride mx on the weekends. i love them for both applications. i would have them sent in and revalved for the 400ex height.

If you had aftermarket a-arms of different widths then the 450 shocks would be a great improvement. I would also say that if you do even small jumping and are over 250 lbs then you'd want the 450 shocks. Most people complain they are too stiff but in that case it would help. For most people trail riding, the 400ex shocks are fine though

I do fast trail riding like you would see in gncc races and the stockers just don't work anywhere for riding aggressively. In order to prevent bottoming you need to set the preload as stiff as it can go. This makes them rebound way too fast so they're like pogo sticks. Even set as stiff as possible, you get alot of body roll on corners because the outside shock compresses. For slower/smoother trails they provide a pretty descent ride since they are so soft, but anywhere else they lack stiffness and adjustment. I say go for the 450 shocks.

I have 450r shocks for riding sand and I have the compression and rebound cranked a few turns. You can make them soft for slow small stuff like the 400ex stockers or make them hard for aggressive riding that blows the stock 400ex out of the water. The adjustability is a very nice feature to have.
