well ive seen your quad and it looks amazing btw.
but your quad will outhandle a stock 450r.

but a 450 will have more power no matter what you do to your 400. until you put a 450 engine in it you wont beat a 450 in a drag race.

It's really up to you. IMO I would do it, if the 450 looks good. I see it like this,, You can put so much money into a 400 and still go to the trails and get done in by a 450. With a bigger quad you start with so many advantages. It's up to you, but if it was me, I would be all over that deal.

ive owned both so heres what i think...

-400ex-
better handling, less maintance, better quad for riding tight trails and woods

-450r-
more power, better stock suspension, and bad @$$

What are the mods on each machine?? If your on aftermarket suspension on the 400 you won't be happy with stock 450r shocks!! They can say a 400 won't beat a 450 but I have owned numerous quads a 416-440-450 The 416 and 440 both beat stock 450s up to 4 gear... I never really went past 4th gear so thats all that mattered... If you get your quad built and tuned right you will be happy with a 416 with good suspension for trails..... The 450 def has more grunt and also a great machine depends how much many you put into it.... personally stock they are REALLY tippy and not comfortable... hope this helps

if their both stock id say 450. its lighter faster and new technology unlike the 10 year old 400.but if youve got some money into your quad id keep it.

Importracer - If you are ever are considering racing in sanctioned races go with the 450R! My origional intent was to "just ride on trails" so I bought a 2002 400ex that had very little hours on it .

After attending a desert race 1 time I was hooked. Then I started racing, that was 3 years ago. EVERY race I attend now I always wish I would have gotten a 450R and started building on that.

Don't get me wrong I love my 400ex, but it will never be a 450R regardless how much work, money, extras I put into it. I agree with some of the other guys yes my 440 will put a smack down on a stock 450R. But a built 450R with long travel suspension is very untouchable, thats the honest truth. I know because it happens at every race.

Today if I had the same offer by someone with a very, very clean 2005 TRX450R ...........my 440ex would be gone in a heart beat!!!

That's my story and I'll stick to it!

If you want to be really competetive in big races you will want a 450r if you just race locally in novice class a built 400 will be competetive and you will be happy with it

i have ridden both, the 450 IMO is uncomfortable, a bit un predictable in turns, and the power band is either full power or nothing. dont get me wrong i love the quad, the power is amazing and the stock suspension is pretty good. but in my opinion i would honestly keep my 400ex

Only you can answer this question. Some people just dont like the 450 because they are so used to the 400. I had the choice to buy a 400ex or a 450r and chose the ex mainly because i like reverse, dont care for the looks of the r, and i dont race. I will probably get flamed for my opinion but i really dont like 450r's.

It really depends on your exact use for the atv. I just picked up another 2006 400ex because its the perfect machine for me. I only trail ride in all different types of trials, including rocks and ect... I would love to have more power but it does seem unessessary for my riding. Also I already have an 04, so i bought the 06 just for reverse. So that was most important for me! If your riding mx, dunes then the 450 would be your choice, not for me though.

Oh, I got it! Don't get either, sell your 400 and get a 400ex geo crf frame :D

IMO these two can do anything you want decently, but it depends on what your going to be doing more that will make your decision.

I ride with a 450 all the time through trails and dunes, and on any road i get beat but thats it. but i UNDERSTAND and dont try to kid myself, and know that i will never beat a decent 450 in a drag race. but i ride trails and dunes all throughout michigan and the 400 is awesome in the trail and does everything i want it to in the dunes.

the 450 is built to go fast and it does it well. if you wanna be one of the fastest things goin right now and you tend to get upset when you get beat by your friends get a 450 and you will be happy.

you can make any machine do anything you want but that doesnt mean that is what is was made for and will do it the best.

IMO

ive gota mildly built 416 with 450r shocks. i out perform a 450 in everything. ive never been beat by a 450r in a drag race.ive had 2 yfz and 2 ltr beat me and one hopped up brute force but never a 450r beat me. i love the 400ex and i wouldnt trade for a 450r.

basically if u ride mostly mx or wide open trails u prolly should get the 450r....but if you ride trails that get tight sometimes u should get the 400ex...reverse comes in handy...i prolly would have gotten a 450r if it had reverse...but i'm happy with the 400ex cuz it's less maintenance...only thing i don't like is the stock front suspension....one day i'll prolly get around to spending $1000 for new front shocks....that's just quite a bit of money right now...i also want to get wider pegs....maybe like those ims/roll pegs or something...but the 400ex is great for the riding i do...i have rode it on mx tracks too....it's just with the stock front suspension u have to be careful cuz they will bottom out if u land wrong on a jump....but it's rare that i ride a mx track...most of my jumps are small trail jumps so it's ok..most of the time i'm riding i never get higher than 3rd or 4th gear on trails...so top speed isn't a factor...my friend has a kawasaki 300 lakota sport...that thing is faster in tight trails than my 400ex....due to it's auto clutch and tighter turning radius..but it's terrible on jumps...lol

I have a pretty built 416 and full suspension, i dont know what you have done to your quad. But.. i can really fly through the trails, i have got behind all kinds of bikes going through the trails and i stay right on there a** the whole time. Personally i think i would smoke a stock 450 through tails anyday, as far as a drag race goes im not sure but i would prob beat one in that aspect too, if the 450 is stock. I have never been on a better handling quad in my life. I too thought of trading my built ex for a stock 450, i have now decided to never get rid of this thing. It always starts right up and goes, and i feel like im faster then most the stuff out there in the trails for sure. I have plenty of power and all the handling in the world if your bike is similar i would say keep it for sure.
