z400 oil filter O-ring

I was just curious, theres a small O-ring that goes before u put the oil filter in the hole, any idea what this is for and if its missing will it hurt anything? i just changed my oil and there was not one there?

normally a o-ring is used to '' seal '' ,do i need to say more ?

No need to say more, and i agree totally, i guess i was more concerned with if i have been riding it that way for sometime because the dealer that did my recall job left it out, has it hurt anything? it is critical since the oil filter is all thats in that area.

My guess is that it keep the clean oil clean and seperate from the dirty oil, cause the oil either comes through the filter one way or another.
