This Saturday I will be pressing the old broken sleeve out of my cylinder but I am not sure what year the engine is. I bought the engine with some parts but no frame so I don't have that VIN. There are some numbers on the engine, can I tell what year it is from those and how? I can post pics after Sat if that will help.

Sleeves 1987 1988 and 1989 are all different, any one know why?

88-92 engines will have a powervalved engine and 85-86's do not. I think some 87's had a powervalve also?? 87's had a bigger intake. 87-92 engines were painted blue from the factory. 85-86's were just plain old gray aluminum. Hope this helps some...

That does help a bit thank you, but I still need some more info before I buy a new sleeve for $100.

There is some blue on the cylinder and it looks like it was from the factory type blue paint, I have the numbers from the engine but no dealers seem to be able to look up the year for me...

post a pic with the intake visable, someone will be able to tell right away...

blue paint would say it's an 87 and up, but it's better to know for sure.

88-92 had 6 bolts on the intake. Those years cylinders are the same.

Thanks for the help guys. I found out it is a 1989. Ordered a whole top end kit, sleeve piston rings, everything, $250 shipped.
