i know its possible LTE makes one but im not spending 700 for it when i already have a hmf full and my father order the wrong header so i have a stock 06+ headpipe and i have a 04-05 coming so ill have 2 pipes to use but i think it need a little bending in it would you say to put it on a bender bend it to where i need or just add on to make the curve??

i tried bending the stock pipe for my 400 at first. it kinked like crazy, even after wrapping it in wire, filling it with sand, and using a torch to heat it up. its a very hard material to work with. i would recommend just using the first bend off a stock header, and then having an exhaust shop mandrel bend a pipe to fit the rest. make sure the clamp is in a convenient spot for installing and removing the pipes though.

Do you think jetting will be same if I run 2 stock r pipes with hrc end cap?

its hard to say. i bumped my main up two sizes, only because it seemed a little lean on top. it didn't affect any other range though. the only way to know is to try.

sorry to dig up a thread from forever ago, but i think i have my next mini project.. i want to fabricate the mounts and everything on a stock exhaust canister, and run dual stock pipes.. i'll keep everybody updated.

2 pipes running in the stock location but without merging together? going into a canister with two in's instead of one?

na, exactly how i have the HMFs, just using two stock canisters instead. i'm guessing it would be ultra quiet, but still flow decently. truth be told, i just did some welding yesterday and the bug has hit me again. not to mention, there are some trails that we ride where you get pulled over and sound tested just for having sport quads. even when we're going slow enough to practically count the knobbies on my front tires. i know the HMF's will pass (since i've been pulled over before,) but i'd rather have something that doesn't even make them think it might be too loud.. at least for that trail. the HMFs will be on for everything else.

That will look awesome.

I remember following this thread while it was in process.....and just read thru it again from page 1. I know you've changed a lot of things since the pics in this thread, you need to post a recent pic of it....it's one of my favorite 400's. Job well done!

thanks for the compliments. not a whole lot has actually changed besides putting a stock airbox back in and moving the battery up to the front.

for a while, i have been wanting to do dual stock pipes for the quieter trails and i'm doing just that :) . so far i have the left pipes mount cut off and rewelded. i'm going to add another support bracket, and then i just need to add a few inches for a sort of midpipe. this project is a lot easier than the last one, since most of the hard work has already been done. looking forward to getting some pictures posted and taking some decibel readings.

referring to your name, did you run your 416 on a stock pipe? I'm about to do it and im curious

for a while, it felt basically stock, but it was pretty much bone stock except the actual bore size. it's been changed a little bit since then. :p pictures should hopefully be up on monday assuming i get the parts to fix my phone so i can upload them.

I pretty much read this whole thing all during computer class here at school just now and i gotta say you was commited! You ran into some of them there problems but you blew by them like they were nothing. I actually think this should be stickied so others know some information on how to do duals.

Good job man! Your work is appreciated.

thanks cheater!

ok guys, sorry for the delay but i couldn't upload pics until i fixed my phone.

here's what i did to make sure i could line up the new midpipe. i basically just taped a piece of paper to help make sure i have the angle set correctly. i can also set the length based off of it.

i also wrapped a filler rod wire around the HMF so i can set my distance from the top subframe tube.

here's a shot of it laid out after i chopped the mount off.

here's a side view so you can see how it will line up.

as of this moment, i have the mount rewelded and the pipe is bolted up. i have also ordered a small one foot section of 1.5"D 16 gauge exhaust piping. i will be welding on a second mount next time i get some free time in the lab. the second mount will use some of the battery mounts that i left on the subframe. i can't wait to get this all together and jetted.

Your subframe is dirty.

Just an idea for a far lighter weight muffler with no modding to the can.

wow now that's awesome! great idea, that i would definitely look into, but i will only be using this setup on one of the trails we ride. other than that and around the house, it'll be my HMFs. i could not believe how quiet that was. i'm hoping to have similar results.

The secret to quiet and power is lots of space for the gasses to expand cool . Those Suzuki mufflers can handle an engine making 150 horse while staying under 80 decibels. So instead of the usual aftermarket glasspack with a small power killing restrictor tube to quiet it down they use huge free flowing chambers and large diameter tubes.

if i decide that this is a setup i will be running more often in the future i will definitely be looking into this a little more. i would still need to mildly modify the left canister because my mounts are not exactly symmetrical, but it wouldn't be a big deal. thanks for the tip, i've always trusted your advice.

i had a little bit better luck with bending the piping this time around :o . i simply put steel stock in the tube on the ends so that it couldn't collapse. i did end up going a slightly different route because i just do not have any room to get creative with bends since stock pipes are so much longer than the HMFs. time to practice TIG welding steel.. also got several jets ordered today from jetsrus.

wish i had a lot more time for this project, but i simply do not, so nothing is very pretty, but i'm thinking it should at least work.

here's my brother just tacking the midpipe to the silencer so i can tig weld it.

http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/2729/photo0713a.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/51/photo0713a.jpg/)

here's an extra mount i added to take stress off the head pipe.

http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/9257/photo0720e.jpg (http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/72/photo0720e.jpg/)

here's what i ended up with.. i really hope it fits..:ermm: it sure looks like its going to be off.

good work pipeless. i think im going to pick up a tig here in january so i no longer have to barrow or haul my stuff to have it tig welded. i would like to make a custom header for my houser crf hybrid but time and tools are the issue. any thoughts on turning a custom reducer for the flange on the end to give it a nice smooth flow instead of haveing a seam to it? possibly turn one end of the reducer just slightly over sized so that the stainless tube when bend will slip slightly in for a good seal. i will try and draw what im thinking up in a cad/cam program to show what i mean.

thanks for the interest! the quad hasn't even been started for several months.. in the last 3 months i got a puppy, new girlfriend, started a new job, and bought a house.. things got a little crazy. once the dust settles a bit and it warms up outside i'll look at this again.

not sure if i ever updated on the results, but it was definitely quiet. in fact, i would guess it is around stock levels with an open airbox and a 450r carb! i did have to jet down a bit, so this tells me the power is probably down slightly. i'm ok with that since it will only be used in one place.
