I'm torn between the nikon D60 and the Canon Rebel XS100d. Anyone here have any comments either way? Seems like the D60 is a glorified D40. I have some experience with Canons 35mm's. I'm thinking either one will be good, help please...

I have a D60 and I love it. I'm no camera pro at all, but the capabilities this camera has is rediculous compared to my old fujifilm.
Here's a few sample pictures I took the first day...on auto. Imagine what you can do when you learn a little about exposure, etc.

I love it. It's got plenty of features to keep me occupied until I don't suck with it anymore, haha

As much of a fan as I am of Nikon, between the two I would probably look hard at the Canon in this class. Glass is cheaper so you could build a decent arsenal and at some point in the future when you want more camera, you will have the glass to carry you well into the next level.
All of the entry and mid level digital slr's are capable of producing stunning images. You just have to ask yourself if you need a body that can handle 50,000 shots, has 8 fps etc.

Pappy, do you know some good forums or websites to check out for information on photography, camera setups, lens, ect.? My girlfriend just got a Nikon D70 that we purchased from Amy McConnell. She is getting more and more side work from people for weddings, engagements, and other events now so we are looking for some ways to improve and look more professional. I know you do are always out shooting and do excellent work so I figured you could point us in the right direction for research. Thanks!

woodsman...try dpreview or nikonians.org flickr and even some books on basic portraiture and photography for a start
snacob14-I was stating that a beginner or someone on a budget has to ask themselves what features are worth the extra cost.
