1) CCC MEETING IN SAN DIEGO (Feb 4 - 7)

Although we were successful at the CCC meeting last year, the permit to operate the Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area (ODSVRA) is reviewed yearly. That means that in February 2003, the CCC will be considering partial to total closure of the ODSVRA yet again. To add to the challenge, the meeting will be held in San Diego.

WE NEED YOU TO ATTEND!

The Sierra Club is already planning to get everyone they can to this meeting - we embarrassed them in Santa Rosa last year by out numbering them ten to one. The meeting is scheduled the week of February 4th 2003. We won't know the exact day until just a few weeks prior to the meeting. Check out our website for up-to-date information: www.oceanodunes.org. Please make every effort to attend the meeting. Sign-up to speak and remind the CCC that the plover fledgling success rate at the ODSVRA was one of the highest in California this year! The predator management program IS working. We don't need to fence off any more areas!

We will send out more information in January that will aide you in writing letters and speaking to the CCC.

2) FINANCIAL CONRIBUTIONS NEEDED! (URGENT!)

Friends of Oceano Dunes continues to fight very hard to maintain Access For All at the Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (ODSVRA). We have been able to accomplish a great deal over the past year and half since our founding, and we are far from done.

In order for us to continue, we need your financial assistance. We have an outstanding attorney, David Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard represents many great offroad organizations like CORVA, ORBA and the ASA.Mr. Hubbard has been able to argue our case in front of the CCC, a federal judge and a magistrate judge…but he has more to do.

We are asking you to make a tax-deductible contribution so we can continue our fight. We feel confident that we have the expertise, we have the sound science and now we need your help!

Please donate on-line or mail a check to the address below.

3) BUGGY RAFFLE (BUY TICKETS!)

We are stepping up our efforts to fund the legal fight to keep the ODSVRA open to all who wish to visit and enjoy participating in the many activities available at the popular park. In order to be successful in this fight, a tremendous amount of resources, including volunteer time and financial support from our many members and supporters, is required. In an effort to build upon the momentum that has been generated, FoOD is embarking on this new and exciting project. More info: www.oceanodunes.org/raffle/buggy.asp

4) LAWSUIT UPDATE!

Over a year ago, the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit asking for immediate and total closure of Pismo. Since then we've hired the best lawyers to fight against this threat. We've spent the last 6 months in negotiations hoping not to go to court. However, these negotiations have completely broken down. The Sierra Club has announced plans to file a temporary injunction requesting immediate and total closure of the ODSVRA until their court case is heard. We need your financial support! It has already cost us a tremendous amount of money in legal fees and yet we haven't even gone to court!

As we've said before… the science is on our side, we don't want to lose because we ran out of money!

5) NEXT BEACH CLEAN UP- PLEASE ATTEND!

Anthony Herring and other Friends of Oceano Dunes members will be cleaning the Oceano Dunes on Sunday Dec 29 at 1pm. Go to the "Friends Camp", bags will be provided....look for the signs and banners.

All are welcome and if anyone needs a ride down the beach, send Anthony an email atanthony@oceanodunes.org

6) CLOSING COMMENTS!

Our battles are far from over. We have battles occurring on the Technical Review Team (TRT), with the California Coastal Commission, and the ever-threatening lawsuit. With all this work, we need help.

We are looking for a membership director and a webmaster. These volunteer positions would greatly help us continue to be successful. Feel free to email us at oceanodunes@earthlink.net if you have any questions.

The 2002 Western Snowy Plover report has been released, and the results were outstanding. The ODSVRA had a 1700% improvement over last years fledgling rate. We will be posting this report on the website soon. Unfortunately, when we are successful many think this is justification to take more beach away…all the while they ignore the 14 miles of beach fenced off South of the camping and riding area. Rest assured…we are voicing our concerns.

Thank you for your continued support. We want to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year.
