I'm sure it will but may have to use 450r chain if the swing arm is longer than 400ex swing arm. Only benefits I see is a longer swing arm

Don't quote me on that.. Why a 250r motor in 400ex frame? Just curious....

if you get a 450r swingarm, you will need baisicly the whole 450r rear end. (shock, link, swingarm, bearing carrier, axle)

i've been looking to do the same. keep in mind the swingarm got longer on the '06 450r... i'd look for one of those.

the 04-05 r swingarm is actually the same lenght , the 06 is longer, but by running the r swinger you can have the better rear brake system

I can't find the thread but someone put an 06+ swinger on a 400ex and all the 400ex stuff besides the carrier stuck out a lil bit and the it was 1/12 inch longer. If anyone finds this thread pm me the link. Need it.

if you use the 450r swinger all the componets will fit on it from your 400ex wit out a problem. axle, carrier, your brake caliper. it does give you the option to upgrade to the better brakes but u dont have to. 04-05 are the same length as the stock 400ex and the 06 is 1" or 1.5" longer the the stock swinger. i did the conversion on my 400ex and i love the way the geometry is with +2+1 a arms.

are you talking about a-arms or swing arm? i did the 450r swing arm conversion and i had use the whole brake set up off a 450r...caliper, rotar, and caliper mount and rotar mount. not sure if i am forgettin anything else. did anyone notice a stiffer shock maybe? i cant remember how it rode before i did the conversion years ago but the rear shock is hard as hell, i just bought a tcs revalve i hope it helps

couple of things...

2005 swinger is the same in length as the 400ex swinger. The 2006 is little over 1/2" longer so you will need a longer chain unless you run 13/36 sprockets then you should be fine (which is close to 14/39 gearing).

The width of the 450r swinger at the rear where the carrier slides in is narrower than the 400ex. This is because the 450r carrier is thicker on the left side where there are two bearings. If you use the 400ex carrier, it will stick out some on this side. Best to use a 450r carrier as you have 3 bearings instead of 2.

The 400ex front sprocket is further to the left than a 450r front sprocket thus the chain will be further left when putting the 450r swinger on. It is easy to fix this by spacing the chain guide or using aftermarket chain guide that is wider.

The benefit of a 450r swinger to me is gaining ground clearance from using rock ring sprocket guards and the smaller rotor guards. I like the stainless steel ones from Lonestar but there are others out there. Cool setups don't exist for the 400ex swingarm as far as I know.

You can convert your 400ex swinger to 450r brakes so it isn't necessary to go to 450r swinger to use 450r rear brake caliper.

You can use the 400ex shock and linkages with the 2005 450r swinger for sure. Honestly, I didn't do the measurements on a 2006 swinger to know about shock length and linkages.

question..........say I wanted to use a 450 swinger, could I use my 400ex shock and gt thunder xc linkage without any trouble of it chainging the ride height or suspension travel?

Use the 400ex linkage. There is a slight, slight difference in distance when measured from the center of the swingarm bolt and the center of the mounting hole for the linkage...it is insignificant...I think it was 1/16" if I remember correctly. The vertical height placement of the linkage mount hole location is the same. I've done this on 2 400ex quads and haven't noticed any difference in the ride.

you can use the 400ex shock. I use a 450r rear shock on my 400ex so it can be done vice versa
