I am unhappy with the performance of my sons 125 in the sand. I am considering installing a fully built (15 HP - 12RPM) LT80 motor. Has any tried this?

We just installed a Lifan 140, and they make them up to a 160, they bolt right in, no mod's needed, and fairly cheap, probably would work out to be the cheapest and easy route for you, and they run a whole lot better- stock- VS- stock than the typhoon.

I don't think you're going to be totally happy with an LT80 motor. In the sand the stock Typhoon motor will struggle. But this bike is totally restricted when it's imported. Get rid of the stock carb and add a Mikuni 26 and a better airfilter and it'll be like putting a pipe on. Nite and day difference. To take it one step further you can open up the stock head as well. The intake port is only 22mm. I opened my sons head up to 26mm and bought a 26mm intake to match it. I have a ported stock head here if you're interested. As Leager said you can also put a 150cc motor in for around $500. That's a 13/14hp motor there with no mods done to it.

the most important thing to do for the typhoon in the sand is make sure you arent running the stock holeshot motocross tires on it . get sand tires for it all the way around the stock tires dig in. Next i have a gpx 125 in my sons typhoon. I have ported the head put a cam in it and a 146 big bore kit. it runs pretty good in the sand now. i think when we go to the dunes later this year i am going to put my fully built yx160 motor in it. I have a tb big bore kit on it with the tb v2 head and holly crap that thing rips in my pit bike. it is hard to hold on to and control. so i am going to try it in my sons quad.

Is the 160 kit the same kit that TBOLTUSA sells? I just want my kids quad to keep up with the other LT80 in camp when we go to Glamis. I did install sand stars all around. The bike just needs about double the HP.

the stock typhoon 125 puts out something like 6 horse power. The stock yx160 motor that you can order for between 5 and 600 bucks puts out right around 11 horse power stock. with the tb v2 head, porting, cam, and big bore kit you end up just over 20 horse.

yx160 crate engine = 550-600
tb v2 head = 369
cam = 100
porting head (AHP) =100
no limit Kitaco CDI = 75
TB BBK 165 kit (make 177cc) =195
stock yx160 pipe from Pitster Pro = 125
vm 26 carb w/klx style intake = 300
total = 1900ish and one bad *** ripping motor

so far with my yx 160 i have the Big bore kit, the TB v2 head, the pipe, the carb, cdi, hotter ignition coil, and i run the cam that came with the v2 head. i plan to port and get the new cam before long.

My son rode his stock 125 in the dunes at Glamis with Skat Trac Haulers on it. We went 5 miles out and it had enough power for him... he weighs 55lbs so maybe that is the difference

sand stars are kinda heavy compared to a skat track. i had them on my sons mini at first but after the first trip to the sand i switched them out in favor of the skat track haulers. they were alot lighter.

Does anyone know if the piston pin in a 125 is 13mm? Also what is a tb v2 head?

It's a 13. TB has a new bigvalve head with 30mm intake valves and 23.5 exhaust valves. I can't get hp #'s compared to the Lifan bvh so I'm hesitant on switching. Lifan bvh (what's in my sons bike) is 27intake and 23 exhaust.

OK lets see what happens. I am ordering the 160 kit from TB. Piston, cam, jug, big valve head, carb. and stuff. They will port and polish the head for an extra 150. I just need to pick a exhaust system. Anything else that I should be looking at?

the one 160 i am talking about is not a kit but a complete crate motor.

ogm version from Tboltusa (http://tboltusa.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=114_117&products_id=846)

gpx 160 engine (http://tboltusa.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=114_115&products_id=597)

tb v2 head for use on the yx motors (http://tboltusa.com/store/product_info.php?cPath=51_105&products_id=642)

in either case i would have ahp port the head and lighten the fly wheel.
