Currently have the stock tires on my 400EX.

Looking to get some really tough tires that will hold up to desert riding, i.e., lots of rocks, hard dry dirt, and occasional sand.

I don't race or run a track at all. Mostly California desert riding.

Any suggestions?

dave,
Where in So. Cal. are you?
I ride El Mirage mostly, am going to Johnson Valley/Lucerne in the next few days, and want to do the Silverwood ridge trails.

if you are anywhere near Orange county, you can go to Cycle Parts West on Beach Blvd in garden Grove, or Dycorp on Ball in Anaheim for good tire prices.

I will be going with either Kenda Knarlys, or Razr II's

Has any body tried the ITP TracStars on the 400ex in the CA / AZ Deserts.

That is the tire I have my eye on it has good mag reviews, 6 ply radial, light weight and comes in 22" rears & 23" fronts.

ya they work and I cant beleive how long they last. I gave the wife my hand me downs 6 ply razr 2 w/ about 50-60% tread a little over a year ago for her 400. I grooved them through the center and sharpend the knobs up. Lots of hours and even a good bit of road riding from trail to trail they still look about the same as when i put them on. And the set i bought for my raptor are still 80% id say w/ quite a few xc races and lots of trail riding on them.

I have the regular razrs on my 250r theyve been holding up great too. From my experience they are hard to beat all around for what im using them for.

I love my Kenda Klaws. The rears have a reversable tread pattern to better suit different riding styles and terrain. Fronts are 4 ply and rears are 6.

actually fronts are six ply now as well. however, i can't wait till my rears wear out.. i can not get forward traction under hard acceleration.

Personally, I love how the stock rear tires hook up. On snow I can accelerate alot harder than other quads with razrs. Only downside is they are not six ply and I have put more than one hole in them. Razr's are tough, that's for sure. In sand and snow they aren't that good, but anywhere else they seem to do great. I had razr 2's in the past and they hooked up excellent but were really heavy. They make a good xc tire because of the tread design on the sidewalls and the deep main treads.

i guess ill be the odd one, but ITP Holeshot HD's are amazing. I prefer them over razors 2's. Both are great tires

Never had an issue with carlise turf tamers on the rear and dunlop (i forget the model but its a radial) on the front. Course I mostly ride sandy trails.

I have stocks on my 400ex going to go to ITP holeshot original

I have the ITP Holeshots on a banshee and they work great.

I use AMS on my 4x4

I also thought about kenda knarly's

Wow, Kenda has the new Parker DT's especially made for Desert riding. See http://www.kenda.com.tw/eng/product/ic/k535a_desert.htm

Think I'll look around for those. They seem to be somewhat cheaper than the Holeshot HD's or Razr 2's and still have the 6-ply rating.

If anyone knows where I can find them, let me know.

ive got tracstars on the 400 and they work well in the trail but cant testify on desert. if youre satisfied with the stockers Dunlop makes tires almost identical to them.

Hole shot XCR's work realy well and suprisingly enough hold up to a lot of abuse...only problem is they are just a touch heavy (as are all HD tires) Only reason I say these tires, are because they are very versatile over different terrain and will take a lot of abuse.Obviously not a paddle tire or a Pro wedge these would not hold up to rugged abuse

I have ITP Holeshot XCTs on my 400ex and they hook up really well. I would recommend them. I know the next tire I get will either be ITP Holeshot HDs or Maxxis RAZR IIs. Im tired of flat tires.

Maybe the better question to be asking woud be:

"What is better,... a pair of FREE tires, or a pair that is going to cost approx $260 ???"

Hhmmmmm......

keep a watch on your local craigslist for a pair of stocker, or cheap A/M wheels for $20-$30, then you've got both sets to swap back and forth.
Always nice to have a set of spares in the truck while riding, and a free set is hands down the best tires made.

I've had razrs and now I have knarleys. The razrs were fun and they were really easy to control, god for normal everyday recreational riding. Now since I've had the kendas I have excellent bite and grip out of corners. They definitely live up to their name, they go through some knarley stuff. I've yet to get stuck because of them, and they have gotten me out of a lot of problems. I may ride a couple times a month and have had them for 8 months now and I dont see any visible tread loss. Good strong tire.

Get a set of Holeshot GNCC's. I've had mine for over a year and they're still at about half tread. They get traction on any surface

This year i am running GBC X-Rex tires and they are really nice tires and come at a good price. Check them out if you get a chance. They have several tires to choose from but the X-Rex seems to be the best fit for XC racing.
