View Full Version : How to remove kicker idler gear bearing?

I'm replacing the crank and crank bearings right now as preventive maintenance, and want to do all the other bearings and seals in the bottom end while it's apart.

Anyone know any tricks to remove this bearing?
Service manual shows a special bearing puller tool, but I don't want to have to buy a tool for every different size bearing.

This bearing actually had some metal flakes in it.

rockymountains tusk makes a really sweet bearing puller. It has a slide hammer, and a collet that expands into the bearing then you pull the slide on the hammer, and it pops out.

the metal flakes are probably from your clutch. being thats the clutch side.

Cost more then the bearings lol

Is something like this my only solution?

if you have a dremel of someting similar you can grind the race a little and hit it with a chisle and it should break apart, just make sure that you dont gouge the bearings seat.

Have u ever pulled these bearings out before? How good are they in there?

Think I'd be able to get them out with a small hook tool?
Friend that has done YFZ bottom ends recommended needle nose pliers.

I figured they'd be in there firmer then that.

i havent actually removed those bearings. or any blind bearing for that matter. but if you can get in there with a hook or whatever and try pulling it out, go for it. i dont think youll get very far tho, but you never know. you could put the motor in a box and take it to a stealership and have them pop out the blind bearings for you. you might get charged like 10 bucks for them to do it. if its a quick job they might do it for free.

Ya if I don't have any luck I'll just take the cases to a shop and have them pop em out.

I'll even try Movin32's idea :P
I'll prolly just shoot grease everywhere though.

Yeah I know I'm cheap lol.
That's how I'm able to spend the money I do on the bike, I'm super tight with my money on everything else :P

I talked to the mechanic at a local shop, he'll pop the bearings out for me.

Nothing, just replacing all the bottom end bearings/seals while the cases are split.
Except the main tranny bearings.

There was some metal shavings in that bearing, and inside the shaft that the idler gear goes on. But like pro-rider said it's prolly from the clutches or baskests anyway.
