The 2009 Indy Show Build is under way. I started with a brand new 08 450R kicker. It will again be featured in the Maier plastic booth. I want to thank Jeff Lewis and everyone at Maier for allowing me to do this! Also a thank you to all the other companies that are helping.

There will be several update pictures as I go along as well as pictures of the parts being used and in depth pictures of the engine build.

Below is a list of products I am using for the show.

The frame was first gusseted and welded by my cousin at TIG Specialties. He TIG welded all the gussets in for a much cleaner look. They came out awesome! It was then sent to Pappy at BK Performance for Powdercoat. Pappy did all of the PC and Molycoat for the build!

More gussets/welds.

Dave400ex
01-10-2009, 09:15 PM
With the upper subframe mounts having the outside gussets, I went and got longer bolts so I could put a washer and locknut on the inside for extra insurance.

I picked the engine up last night from Moto-Xperts and was able to get to work today. This was right after it was installed with Moose case saver on.

Other side with kicker on. Last year was my first year using a Rekluse clutch and I absolutely loved it! I won't ride without it now. Plus the guys at Rekluse are great and come out and offer trackside support at the GNCC races.

Whole chassis with engine installed.

After getting the engine in and torqued down I went ahead and put the radiator and fan in next. With those installed I was able to put the CV4 hoses on. The hoses are nice compared to stock because they won't "stick" when trying to take off, are UV resistant, and come in several colors.

I also installed the carb that has a lightened throttle spring, HRC needle, R&D Powerbowl with adjustable leak jet, R&D Flex fuel screw, Tokyo Mods Billet Sump and Hot Start Nut and MX Bonz Vent Hoses. The hot start nut is real nice to get rid of that stock plastic one.

hey dave just wondering. Are you paying for the parts or are they supplied? Just curious, either way you are one lucky guy.

if you followed his last year's build, you would know the answer.
imo, this year is the same??

Some is the same, some is better. No more then last year for sure.

It was nice of your helper to get that MONSTER motor in that pretty frame huh!...;)

Mark this thread on your browser folks, this thing is going to be amazing!

its an AWESOME quad Dave, and no offence, but you can only see so many black/white/red MXP Honda 450's before it becomes cliche. =/

Dave400ex
01-11-2009, 07:54 PM
My helper wasn't bad. :D

Casey the color scheme really has nothing to do with MXP colors. I came up with it myself just like last years. I used these colors because they hold up better then the lighter colors. Plus it's a Honda, it should be Red and Black. ;) What sets this apart from the rest is there is tons of detail and time putting it together that most don't do. I am VERY particular with everything and it must be perfect! Ask Toby and Pappy! :eek2:

I worked on the rear end today but ran into some trouble with one of the seals getting tore up so I wasn't able to get it all done like I had planned. However as soon as I get the seal it can all be put together.

Picture shows all the parts to be installed on the rear end except for the Teixeira Tech linkage. Fox shock, RPM Dominator 2 Axle, RPM Anti-Fade, and Streamline Blade Rotor.

Dave400ex
01-11-2009, 07:57 PM
Another view of rear end parts. The stock Swingarm was retained because they hold up very well and weigh alot less then some of the aftermarket ones. Stock Carrier is also used with all the other hardware.

Dave400ex
01-11-2009, 08:02 PM
Here it is as of the end of tonight. Most likely it'll be Thursday or Friday before I work on it again. I'll be able to get the rear end done, exhaust on and begin working on the wiring and other little stuff.

01-11-2009, 08:32 PM
Have to tell me how that rear end handles compared to last years model. Still on stock swinger with teixtech link myself and I've been debating on tossing on aftermarket.

Getting that thing assembled is going to be the easy part. A lot of breaking in to do and a ton of dialing in, especially with those evols. Oh, and don't let people give you crap about the colors, a lot of people use it cause it looks good, I'd rather be one of ten guys with an awesome looking quad than one of one guy riding some lime green neon pink monstrosity. That being said, paint your grab bar!

atvnut22
01-11-2009, 08:42 PM
the only thing i think about the colors is that the red should have some sparklier or something, that way its not as generic, but i still love the way it looks the way it is

dont worry about justifying your bike or color scheme for others... build it whats in your head!!!! who cares if someone else uses red and black... you used red white and black colors last year and it was one of the nicest on atvriders

Great bike!

4 quick questions....

1. Whats the difference between the Teixtech Link and the Houser/GTT/ect. links?

2. Where can you find the PRM axles? I have looked everywhere and I can only find one on eBay everynow and then.. :ermm:

3. I know this question has been asked, but it wasn't answered.. do you have to pay for all these parts out of your own pocket or are you being sponsored from all of the companies?

4. What is going to happen to the bike once the show is over? Are you going to keep it, part it out, sell it, or what?

(x2 on painting the grab bar)

Nice looking bike!

Dave400ex
01-12-2009, 05:19 PM
Prodigal I wouldn't waste your money putting on an aftermarket swingarm. There is no need for one on the 06-ups. I've talked with several people who run the Teixeira Tech linkage with Fox all the way around and everything has been positive. Micheal Burrows and Duane Johnson (GNCC Pro) both run this rear linkage with stock swingarm and Burrows told me it is the best rear end he has ran to date. (He used the ARS-FX 5.3 before which is one of the best so that's saying alot)

As for putting it together, the actual bolting it together is easy, but there is alot of work to be done before stuff "easily" gets bolted together, more so with all the Powdercoat. The break-in won't be much different then last year really, just having the air pressures in the shocks is the only difference. After the show it gets engine and tranny oil, engine ice, brake fluid, air filter oiled and race gas. If time brakes will be done before the show. Then the engine and clutch need broke in. After that she is ready to go. Everything is setup and mostly dialed for the show as far as toe, camber, caster, ride height, etc. Like I said the only difference should be playing with the front air pressures. Luckily Toby at Moto-Xperts is an expert with the Fox shocks so it shouldn't take much to get them dialed in.

Little off topic, but was Duane running Teixeira a arms or ars-fx?

Dave400ex
01-12-2009, 05:41 PM
Thanks Hendershot. I actually was going for more of a standard look. I like this Red because it is so shiney thanks to Pappy. I went with what holds up better to GNCC. Pappy told me to go with the Gloss Black.

Brauap

1. Whats the difference between the Teixtech Link and the Houser/GTT/ect. links?

Several things can vary in all the links. Most important is performance. A major thing to look for is if the linkage can be used with the stock swingarm or not. Teixeira, GT Thunder can be, where as the Houser or ARS-FX 5.3 must be used with their swingarms. For the Honda in XC, Teixeira, GTT, and ARS-FX are probably the most popular.

2. Where can you find the RPM axles? I have looked everywhere and I can only find one on eBay everynow and then.. :ermm:

C&D Racing sells them. Several places sell RPM. I get mine straight from Brad at RPM.

3. I know this question has been asked, but it wasn't answered.. do you have to pay for all these parts out of your own pocket or are you being sponsored from all of the companies?

I am sponsored by all the companies, but whatever parts I pay for comes out of my pocket. Can't go into much detail there.

4. What is going to happen to the bike once the show is over? Are you going to keep it, part it out, sell it, or what?

After the show it comes back and I do the full race prep as said above and it will either be raced at the Florida GNCC first or Georgia will be its first race and all GNCC rounds after that.

As for the Grab Bar, my first plan was to Powdercoat the Bumper, Nerf Bars and Grab Bar, but I decided against it because IMO the powdercoat looks worse after it has been beaten by rocks and has chips etc. Just doesn't hold up as well for those parts. And that would be to much black, you don't want a bunch of the same color together it doesn't stick out. ;) Oh plus the deadline, no time for PC on the nerfs as they are custom made...

He switched over to the Teixeira Tech at some point this year with the Fox Shocks all the way around. He ran the Teixeira at the Heartland 10 Hour Challenge. Burrows will also be switching and running the front end as well.

01-13-2009, 07:22 AM
Rath is custom making you some nerfs for xc specific? Any chance them going up for sale at the end of the season? :D

Thanks for all the pictures Toby.

The engine consists of: MXP Tranny Mod, Rekluse Clutch Basket, Z-Start Pro and Cover, CP 13.5:1 Piston, MXP Cam, Port/Polish, Reshaped Combustion Chamber, Bronze Valve Seats and Guides with Dimpled Intake Valves.

Note in pictures 13 and 14 from the top that the Crank Bearing Tabs are positioned wrong from the factory. They need to be Realigned as shown in pictures 15 and 16, Red loctited, and torqued to 12 ft/lbs. This is something that Moto-Xperts takes care of.

The 5th picture from top shows the Bronze Valve Guides installed. This allows the valves to last longer because the bronze valve guides are softer then the stock guides so the valves won't get beat as hard when hitting the bronze.

The 9th picture shows the difference between the stock camshaft and MXP cam.

The 10th picture shows drilling out the rivets on the stock clutch basket to remove the gear from it and put it on the Rekluse basket.

Picture 17 shows the MXP Tranny Mod done that highly reduces the chance of any tranny problems. This is a must for ALL year 450R's.

Turned out to be a good looking engine and one heck of a setup inside the beast! :D

Guys whatever quad you ride or whatever engine setup your looking for give Moto-Xperts a call. Great customer service and amazing power! Moto-Xperts (http://www.moto-xperts.com)

what skid plates are you running with the stock
swingarm?

is the hub too big for the gtt sprocket quard?
or just use longer bolts?

Dave400ex

Here is a close up of the rear master cylinder with Fasst Companies Brake Clevis. It has a stainless pivot pin and bushings so it won't get the slop in it like the stocker does over time.

This is it for tonight. Tomorrow the first thing is to get the grab bar on and exhaust on. Then I'll start messing with the coolant tank and black heat sheild so I can work on the wiring.

Great! I'll be sure to stop over and check your setup out. It should be a great year for Ed, quite a few people will have his products with Fox this season.

Were you able to nail down a front shock length? Ed told me you guys were working on a few different things. Also Eagertorace asked a good question, what Swingarm skid plate setup are you using?

Dave super sweet quad!!! Can't wait til Feb 13th to see it.

Grooving your Razr's for XC is the only way to go, Your taking out the center section of each lug going across, and then do the outside at angles. Next time you see Borichs quad or most of the pros in a magazine take a real close look at the rears

All that does is help the pressure of the thumb throttle no performance gains.

It makes the throttle lighter to push.

Them guys are right, no performance gain, it makes the throttle easier to push so your thumb doesn't get sore. More of an issue with the FCR type carbs...

I hope to make some good progress this weekend, but am still waiting on all the front end parts. I'm hoping to have everything next week as my goal is to have it done next weekend, which will be a ton of work. The show is 3 weeks from today.

it's getting there.......

I'm wondering how close the leverage ratios are between
that linkage and the arsfx stock replacement linkage?

they look to be very similar at the key points.

what skid plate have you decided to run on the swinger yet?

and where's that front end at? lol

is that a R and D power bowl you are running, have you use them before ,does it help with the carb on the newer 450R?

Not sure how close the linkages would be. The way the shock mounts is quite different.

I'll be running the swingarm skidplate made by Michael Burrows with an outer sprocket guard.

Hopefully I'll have all the front end stuff next week. It has taken a while to get everything spec'd out.

That is an R&D Powerbowl, but I haven't used it so I am not sure how well it will work. Wanted to see what all the hype is about...

Yeah this will be the 5th or 6th year in a row I have ran HMF. The fit, finish and quality of the exhaust is great, they have great customer service, they support GNCC racing, and they are easy and cheap to have repacked from HMF.

As for the builders pipes the "3" make good power, but I'm not a fan of them. I think it's dumb to have one engine builders exhaust with another builders engine work.

The swingarm skid I will be using is designed to use the outer guard only. I'm not real set on the dual guard yet, some have had problems with clogging it up, but you can get the mud dog or whatever to help with that.

I had problems with the dual guard and the mud dog or whatever it's called packing up bad. Ran just the outer guard most of the year at some really rocky races and didn't have a problem. Dave, the build is coming out sweet, I hopefully will have the chance to throw some mud on it at a GNCC this year:D !

YES! Still waiting on Fox fronts, Teixeira arms, stem, clamps, Rath nerf bars, stuff from Quadtech, Streamline front rotor and ASV levers. Should have the Fox, Quadtech and ASV stuff this week. Teixeira, Rath and Streamline I'm not sure when it will show up exactly, has to be no later then next week. The shocks/arms are a bit behind because Fox has had the arms to spec them out for the shocks. I'm stressing... :eek2:

Dave400ex

You can lug it more, but you have to make sure your not lugging and going real slow (like 1st gear speed) while in 4th gear because that can burn it up. You still shift like normal, just don't have to use the clutch. I still use it quite often with the over-ride feature though. Love mine it's great in the woods!

You can see the rear plastic hiding to the left in this picture. :D

eagertorace
02-02-2009, 09:24 AM
so what color of plastics are you running this year?

and also I noticed that you got rear hubs done in time
this year.

and what are those red vented discs?

and yes you are cutting it close and hoping to be there
at the show myself.

Benjithx
02-02-2009, 11:28 AM
those are brake guards.

Dave400ex
02-02-2009, 03:01 PM
Marty

Plastic is going to be the Carbon Fiber White for the show. Then I'll have the stock Red I'll use as well.

I had Rear hubs done last year, they just weren't Red like the Fronts were if that's what your thinking.

The Red Vented discs are inner rock guards. I also have outer's that go inbetween the hub and wheel. These keep rocks and other things from getting in the front rotor or bending it. I noticed that they also keep the rotors cleaner in mud races which helps the brake pads as well.

It is going to be close. Nothing I can do, just waiting on parts...

If your at the show you will have to look me up.

To clear the sponsor, none of the issues are on Teixeira, Ed has been nothing but great to work with! He/We had no idea it would take Fox so long to spec out the a-arms and get them back to Ed at the last minute. Then the powdercoater didn't prep the arms correctly and they bubbled. So Pappy had to get them done right! So Teixeira has been great, just have to deal with the other issues that are out of our hands.

Funny you say that about starting after summer break. I had the 08 the weekend after Snowshoe and had it tore down and to Pappy at Ohio. Even starting a full month ahead of last year I am way behind now from last year. lol. That didn't work out.

I'll get it done, but you won't see any final pictures until the show. It will be finished on Friday on the way heading to the show. :eek2: A stop at Moto-Xperts on the way to Indy and it will be done. Also the arms couldn't be Saturday delivered so I'll get them tomorrow and need to finish the front end up Monday, hopefully.
