I used the real ice studs that look like screws but have a sharper head. They are gold in color. Make sure you get course threads because they stay in much better. You shouldn't need tubes (I actually think that the studs would puncture them).

when you say "old" tires do you mean close to bald? you'll have a heck of a time studding them if the lugs are either soft or worn down. Are you looking to compete? If so save the time and head ache and get a pair of Chen Shins for the rear and some new skins for the front. Soft Compounds with shed the screws much faster. Check out Magicracing.com They have all the good ice racing stuff.

When I ride on the lake with say 5 inches of snow, would i be better off studding some old tires or getting new maxxis 4 snows?

Studs are only good if they are making contact with the ice. If there is 5 inches of snow your probably better off with some deep lugs. I've seen guys put snowmobile studs in tires. I personally have no experience with them. I use the screws only. The series i run only allows that type. Good luck!

Thanks for the input! I think I'm just gonna go for some snow tires without studs. Most of the time there is snow on the lake so I don't think studs would be very beneficial.
