We just got a Nikon D60 for Christmas and I'm already loving it. Granted I've got tons to learn before I get anything good from it, but the capabilities this camera has over our old one is incredible.

Two lenses came with it, but I have a feeling we will be picking up another one eventually as well. We have a 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 AF-S and a 55-200 f/4-5.6G for now.

Cool! I got the same D60 package as a grad present in may. Definitely a nice camera with a lot of potential for amateurs.

55-200 for those...it's amazing how quickly you can rack up some pictures though. I took it out back for 5 minutes and I grabbed about 50 shots :p

What's the best amateur upgrades for these? I know my dad wants one of the nicer flash units, but anything else?

Dont buy anything until you read a few books on exposure and your manual. The kit lenses can produce great images as long as you know how to use the camera.

The sb-800 flash is a great addition (sb-900 if you have the $$)

Here is a pic that will make you woozzy if ya stare at it:p Proof that $10,000 worth of body and lens doesnt always equal a great picture:p

Will do, the first week I was mainly just shooting on auto mode just to grab a few quick shots, but I'll try a few other things this week.

What are some good books to look into?

anything on basic photography. its all pretty much the same but you have to get basic exposure and composition down first. then you can go wild:p

They were both taken with a Nikon 300mm 2.8 ($4700) You will need a lens in the 70-200mm($1600) range and use a shallow depth of field to emulate the results. I only state the prices of the lens so you can get an idea of how much you can wrap up in this stuff. You can buy off brands for a little less, but quality suffers.
