View Full Version : My 2009 GNCC Sport Class Build

gpd005
01-05-2009, 03:28 PM
Well, I'm doing something different for 2009. I'm going to build up a 400ex and run 13 rounds in the GNCC series. I ran 12 rounds last year in the 24+C Class and finished 5th so i'll be moving to the afternoon for 09. I traded my 04 450r for this 99 400 and i am in the process of getting her ready. I put my front hipers on it and took it racing the day after i got it. It had a twist on it and that has been changed over to a thumb.
It will be getting:
rear hipers
GBC Tires (all around)
Flexx bars
CNC stabilizer
Powermadd's
PRM front and rear bumpers
Clarke oversize tank
Hot Cam
Chain & sprokets
New plastics
Sparks key

Until then here is what it looked like last weekend before i tore into it. I'll try and keep this thread up to date letting everyone know what the progress is.

why down grade from a 450r?

Not criticizing at all, but this was my first thought also. What was the reason for going from the 450 to the 400? Just curious.

gpd005

They are 450R Front's redone by GT Thunder and a stock rear shock rebuilt by GT Thunder with a GTT Link as well.

As for the reason for chaning, well, i guess i was just looking for something new. I like to change bikes and i had been on my 450 for a couple years. I started looking into 400 parts and realized how much cheaper the parts were and just decided i would give it a shot. The wife doesn't even mind me ordering parts for the 400 cause they are so much cheaper than what i was spending on the 450. At least that's what i keep telling her:D

Made some progress on the bike over the past couple weeks. It now has a CNC Stabilizer, Powermadd's, sparks key advance, hipers, GBC tires, and a few more parts in the mail. Oversize tank, and Flexx bars, sproket guard along with new plastics and graphics should complete this ride. I don't have any new pictures of it but should have some in the next couple weeks of it completed. I did race it this past weekend and finished 3rd in the B Class out of about 15. I think i was the only one still on a 400 and passed several 450's so i'm really happy with the outcome so far!

I think the 400ex is way underestimated for local racing. I would say a huge percentage of 450 owners that race at a local level can't come close to riding to a 450's full potential, so all of that extra power is worth very little. I raced WORCS Production B and was one of maybe two or three 400ex's in in the whole series. WORCS has a MX section, but is mostly desert/XC terrain. I passed a lot of 450s that stalled in the tight stuff due to how the power delivery is on those engines. My 416 is like a tractor, so I just lugged around them a gear high, gunned it and feathered the clutch, and I was outta there. They are a little heavier, but the geometry is very similar, so again, unless you're a top level rider, that extra power and the delivery might not be such an advantage. And yes, parts are cheap! ;)

Yep, good quality piece, it performs just like a W.E.R. not quite as good as a precision but it will get the job done! Are you planning on racing any this year?

Is that a stick or rotary style damper Garon?

Can't wait to see pics of the quad finished. ;)

gpd005
01-22-2009, 09:01 AM
It is a rotary type. It looks like a precision the way it mounts but it functions just like a W.E.R. the pressure is adjustable but it stays the same all the way thru. So it doesn't have the feel of nothing there any time. It keeps a constant pressure on the stem.

Still thinking about it. Moving sport back to morning makes it tempting. I'll definately run at least a couple of them though.

gpd005

Sounds good man! I think the sport class will have a good showing in 2009. Moving it back to the morning will help bring the numbers back up.

is there any special regulations?

i have a 99' 400ex, yoshi full exhaust , jetted , no air box lid k&n filter and nerf bars, 1 tooth down on front , and thats about it. could i use this?

gpd005
01-26-2009, 06:56 AM
Yeah, you could race that as long as you get teather kill switch installed on it. You might want to condsider some kind of filter lid though. There are some deep water crossing in places.

I finally got around to getting some pics. up of my little project. I've done a few things and will do a few more next week when my flexx bars come in. It's nothing special but i'm having fun with it regardless. It's still dirty so i guess that will make it look better on the next set of pictures when it's clean!:)

Look at those BRAND NEW X-Rex's.... Wish I had some new treads to put on mine. lol

Looks good Garon, now clean that sucker up and take some "trailer queen" pics of it before it gets all hammered from the GNCC season.:p

Can't wait to see the "finished" pics. See ya in Georgia.;)

gpd005
02-05-2009, 07:09 AM
The hood was an easy intall, whack the headlight up and get creative when bolting it on. And i think it looks much better.

No nerfs for me, since i don't have reverse my feet will serve that purpose when needed. I will end up with some heal guards at some point though i'm sure. And I'll work on the trailer queen pics. Bryan. Cause we all know that it will never look that good again.

Very Nice 400! I just did the same thing by getting rid of the 450 for something different. I did mine because of my move to Indiana but found a ton of people ride here so I bought the 400 very cheep!

A few questions, what size fronts do you run...21 or 22? Have you done any engine mods or what have you checked in the engine other than the clutch?

We will have to get together and ride soon too!

DRich43 check out www.ixcr.com it is a cross country racing series here in Indiana that a bunch of us around here race in. And i will be working on more pictures this week when i install the new bars, tank, and plastics. And now that it's above freezing i can actually wash the thing.

redteamgo2000
02-09-2009, 12:44 PM
hey man im watching this because we also race in the gncc at some of the more local races to indiana. the spartan, powerline park, ironman mostly. the indiana xc series is nice and most of the races arent too far of a drive if your more centrally located as we are. im about 35 miles northeast of indy in crawfordsville. you plan to race ironman this year? if so maybe we can meet up there.

gpd005
02-09-2009, 12:48 PM
Yes sir i will be at the ironman and most of the IXCR races as well. IXCR is having a couple races in Greencastle so that won't be far for you at all.

redteamgo2000
02-09-2009, 10:01 PM
never raced an ixcr event yet... watched but never raced. went to the bad lands races last year. have you ever raced at greencastle yet? im trying to figure out where it is located in greencastle and what to expect course wise. its august and november or something like that right?

i have a 416ex stage 2 hotcam with full lrd exhaust, 450r carb, k&n filter, stock arms with pep rear rebuild and gt thunder fronts. durablue axle and 1 down front sprocket. it runs pretty good its apart right now getting new rings and ported and polished with new valves and springs. so i should be ok id imagine.

gpd005,

How are the GBC tires?
They look similar to Razrs.

Also, what rear skid are you running with the GT Thunder link?

gpd005
02-10-2009, 12:35 PM
The GBC's are great! The front's are exactly like the Razr 2's that everyone runs and the rears hook up really well. I think i will groove mine to help them have more side bite but i am very happy with them.

I'm not sure what brand the skid is i just cut on it a lot to cover part of the chain and the brake rotor.

DRich43
02-11-2009, 02:15 PM
gdp..I plan on racing a number of the races this year in the IXCR! A few people have already told me about the series, i've watched a few clips on youtube and look forward to the start.

So what engine parts did you look at or into before all this. I most reciently had a '06 450r with the HRCkit so I'm not all that familiar with the 400ex motor. Any guidence would be great.

Thanks again,

gpd005
02-11-2009, 02:44 PM
I did the Sparks key timing advance and that made the power a lot snappier. I also have a hot cams stage one cam. I had a 416 kit in my old 400 a couple years ago and it ran really good. Just stay away from the higher compression pistons. I wouldn't do much more than a 416 if you are going to do anything. A full exhaust system helps and a bigger battery helps it fire up quicker on the dead engine starts. Be sure you have skids and you should be ready to go racing. Also a kill switch will be required this year as well.

Thanks for the info... they look on par with the Holeshots and Razrs I usually like to run... so I will definately consider them next time.

I'd like to have a set of those on my Sport 400.
I need a really light steering tire on the front of it.
Does that style front tire reduce effort at the bars?

So you have a sparks key and hotcam on a stock motor?

I appreciate the info on the pistons too. If I build mine I think I'm going 416 or 426, unless I don't need that much machining. What compression ratio do you suggest?.... I was planning a pump gas compression anyways....

As for the sparks key... it can still be added on some rebuilds beyond stock on the piston right?

garon when i get my old 400 back and runnin- im gona come over and try out one of your IXCRs. The race will be on!!!!! good thread man- im gettin ready to get both my quads re PCd and start my build.

hey garon, just stumbled on this thread, used to seeing you on harescrambletalk.com. I was wondering what is the bigger battery you run and does it fit in the stock battery holder. oh yeah the 400 is lookin good.

gpd005
02-13-2009, 09:28 AM
digger71, what's up man, i am running the ytz14s battery. I believe it fits the Honda VTX1300 street bike. But it is the exact same size at the stock 400ex battery and cranks it over much faster. Mine isn't a Yusa but it is the Western Power Sports make of this same size.

And I say bring it on Mark!!!!!!

And yeah, i have the sparks key with the stock motor but everyone says it really works if you have a 416 kit with the sparks key. I know i could tell a big change once i installed it. It made the power a lot snappier and I also removed the choke. So far i am really happy with the power that it makes for being a 400.

I got the wifey to groove my tires for me and had the bike all set up for a cold muddy race. But the race got canceled so now it's time for the new plastics, tank, graphics, and number plates then head south for round 1 of the 2009 GNCC series. I'll try and snap a few more before it hits the track down there.

thats a sprocket gaurd. kinda like a skidplate but it just protects the chain and sprocket. it gives you a little more ground clearance than the traditional skidplate

gpd005

GBC makes the x-rex tires. (Green Ball Company) They are fairly new in the atv market but make a great tire and a lot of shops are starting to carry this tire.

They're not available through Motosport right now. Heres a link to find a dealer near you.

You could also see if any of the site sponsors sell them.
