I am buying a 2004 Honda 450R with a full ESR exhaust, a CT racing piston (size unkown), HotCam Stage 2, K&N filter, and a set of nerfs. Has had about 8 hours used in the last 3 years, mostly for dune riding. It has been maintained locally by a decent shop, including a recent valve job. I think its got fairly low hours on it, according to the lack of rub marks on the side covers and overall look of it. His brother used it before him for I'd say 30 hours.

I've had 3 450R since 2004 and have never had any problems with any of them. No smoke. No crank issues..etc.

I have heard of others having mostly that crank problems. Question is this - What should I be listening to or looking for regarding this. I've just always listened to the engine run and based it off how it sounded. And if there was no smoke at start up. And other obvious things such as oil leaks.

Thanks!

Look for cracks on the case at the kicker.
