I have always just basically wiped the surface clean and installed a gasket,, BUT what is the TRUE PROPER way to install a gasket????

I have never heard anyone ever talk about that,, considering that a gasket is VERY important when re-building a motor..

make sure the surface is clean from all leftover gasket material but make sure you do not remove any metal. as long as both gasket surfaces are clean and true you will have no probs. put some oil or anti-seize in the screw holes and snug the item in a staggered cross pattern. then torque to spec.

sometimes there are things that can be put on the gasket to help with adhesion. other than that thats about it

also good torque bearings and lube bands give extra hp:blah

Check the head and cylinder to see if they are true. Get a pane of glass and use a feeler gauge to see if there are any gaps.
