I have a good 86' 250R, pretty much a rooling chassis, coming into my garage really soon. It will be a loooooong term project due to lack of funds and time.

My question is about picking a motor for it. My first choice is to find a tired 250R motor, rebuild it and stick it right in.

My next choice ?????? What are some good motor choices to use in the frame? What would be a good alternate motor to use?

I was thinking of an XR650 or XR600 motor for it. But I am concerned about the weight and if it is going to throw off the feel of the machine.

Maybe a CR250 or CR500 motor.

What would you guys who have done other motors in the R frame run into? Good and bad? How did it ride? Were you really happy with the way it turned out?

I am leaning towards keeping it more of an original machine, lightly modified.

Use the motor from an ATK 260LQ dirt bike.

Two stroke, powervalved, counterbalanced.

I can tell you right now that the XR650R motor won't even come close to fitting without moving frame rails an absurd amount; it's just too tall
