Got my upgrades in motion with a few Christmas goodies and parts on the way. Got a new camera too so this will let me mess around with it. So far I adjusted my valves, they were only a hair loose, installed a uni filter, made an airbox lid, removed the choke, installed jets, shimmed the needle, and am putting some mesh over the snorkel to keep the damn mice out. Figured i would do everything at once since it's easier with all of the plastics off. I'll be reassembling it tomorrow and will be installing my exhaust on Monday if it comes in on time and installing my timing advance key whenever I can get a hold of a torque wrench. Here's some pics for now.

nice airbox lid man. and isn't it funny something tiny like the advance key can add more power

Thanks. Ya I'm hoping the key makes some good power. I may just use an impact wrench and install it tomorrow. Sucks my exhaust won't be here till Monday so i can't see the full potential. I was really impressed with air filter compared to stock. You can blow through it and air passes through real easy. On the stock filter I could barely blow any air past the screen, that thing is super restrictive. The uni paired with a pipe should work well. I hope I got my jetting spot on first try so i don't need to tear it down again. Went with a 155 main, 42 pilot for ease of cold starting and put 1 thin washer under the needle.

Took it for a ride today and holy crap. If I stay on the gas it will flip right over in first and second, haven't hit anything higher yet so I'll find out what the other gears feel like. It's running excellent but too rich at 1/8 throttle due to the bigger pilot. Hopefully the pipe will lean it out enough to get rid of that problem. Can't wait to see what it does with a pipe added. I may put my 14t sprocket back on if I find it has enough power to pull a higher gear. So far it seems like it.

magicracing.com has the outerwears airbox lids. To make it I took all of the measurements from a stock airbox lid then designed the hole in the middle so it would have the greatest possible surface area without making the outside rim too weak at any point. I used aluminum plate and cut it out with a jigsaw. Then filed all edges that would come into contact with the outerwears. Then i drilled the holes on the plate and lid. Then i took an exacto and cut one hole and put a bolt though the plate, prefilter, and airbox lid and installed the nut on the other side. Then it was just a matter of a steady hand and exacto work to cut the prefilter to shape. Then I traced and cut out the hole in the lid. Upon installation I applied silicone underneath the aluminum plate and around the hole in the airbox lid to stop the prefilter from fraying and to provide a watertight seal.

Took if for a real ride today and the throttle response is noticeably better. It's running a little fat but that's only to be expected by rejetting before installing the pipe. When I get the pipe tomorrow that should fix it.

its running fat ?

you installed a higher flowing air filter, a high flow lid and advanced the timing ? It should be the other way.......LEAN

How fat was this thing to begin with ?

he already rejetted it for all the mods he had planned. aka with the filter the timing key and everything plus the pipe. it doesnt have the pipe on yet so its running a bit rich.

Precisely. I figured I would jet it while it was all taken apart and I wasn't going to ride a whole lot before i got the pipe.

Finally got my slip on. Installation was a breeze, it fit perfect. It sounds awesome, I'll get a sound clip sometime seeing I have never seen one of a 400ex with this pipe. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.
