With the sounds of rockband blaring from the Codys room, and the new AC/DC album screaming from the basement where Ryan was jamming out...I need to get outside where it was quiet:p

So anyway, my wife has been wanting a picture of a few of the big woodpeckers we have in the area. So I slipped into the woods and sat down behind a big ol' oak tree. I saw a few but nothing close enough to get pics of(I was set up by a tree they normally tear the hell out of). Well, I geuss I kind of dozed off:p

Something rustled the leaves beside me and woke me up and it was "Baby", a whitetail fawn thats been hangin around. I geuss being half out of it I jumped as she was only a few feet from me:p She ran off but by the time I packed up my camera and tripod and got in the house , she was already in the backyard eating corn...lol

Oh well, enjoy the pics.

Well, there is a reason I have been practicing my butt off with the wildlife:p I am planning atleast 5 trips to a location to shoot deer, bear and turkeys in 2009. Its a 10 hour drive each way and I want to have everything down with my gear and have my brain wired to work with my cameras no matter what situation I find myself in. There is only one way to do that and thats to do it over and over and over in changing light and what not.

And yes sir, I live in WV:D

Good Luck with that Pap. It's kinda nice seeing animals on pics rather than them being shot all the time.

The trips will be used to fill up my portfolio for future sales to whomever. They(calendar, greeting card companies, outdoor art etc) only accept top notch stuff so thats why I want to get as good as I can:p

I just love deer period and photography so it all works out for me in the end...just hopefully it can add to the checkbook so that my wife can join in on all the fun I have..lol

Must be nice to see deer around. I didn't see a single deer this year in my stand...

My dad spent full days in his stand sun-mon and only got one doe this season. NY sucks for deer now...

Awesome pics Ken.

If your talking to me, yeah I'd be in! Ducks down on our farm the last few weeks have been a bust, plenty of deer but I have my freezer full, I saw probably 30 sikas last Fri morning and couldn't force myself to drop the hammer. All does and a few small bucks. The most deer I have seen in a morning of hunting ever. They tend to herd up this time of year I guess. I'm gonna wait for some weather to get back down there for ducks so let me know, I'm always looking for a new place to sling some lead. :D Have dekes will travel!

Pappy

aight i will call you when i know what days im going down

also..geese are in until march 4th in the western zone....sounds like it will be time to hit the potomac:p

Once the ducks cupped up and were set to land, I could follow them in and catch an awesome rim light around them.

i think thats where it's at. i'm going with a photographer from DC. it's a photography lesson/class type thing. hopefully i learn a good bit!

Pappy
12-30-2008, 06:56 PM
Thats probably where it is at. The fish get stunned or killed at the exit of the power plant and the eagles have a field day eating them.

If the weather is right next week, I will try to go by there on my way to B-more and gets some shots

Snowskidr
12-30-2008, 07:03 PM
i might try to head there in the next week or two to get some practice. it would be cool to get some shots of some eagles!

Pappy
12-30-2008, 07:09 PM
LOL same here.

We actually saw an eagle the other day when we were shooting the duck pics. It was so far away and I was actually walking to the river when my wife pointed it out. I threw the camera up and snapped a pic, its a wonder it even turned out well enough to see what it was but it atleast proved there are eagles wintering here!

This is a full frame shot using a 630mm f4 so you can see how far away it really was lol

May I ask what shutter speed and Aperature you were using for this shot? Its amazing. Also what lens was used? I have done a few "bird" shots but the clarity of them isn't the best, I am thinkin I need to alter the aperature a few stops to allow for faster shutter speeds??

Pappy
02-06-2009, 05:29 PM
Without looking at the data, I would say f5.6 or 6.3 at around 1/320 of a second.

I was using a Nikon 300mm 2.8 handheld and panned with the bird.

Clarity comes from alot of things, proper exposure, steadiness, glass quality, iso setting

400exBro
02-10-2009, 11:05 AM
Do you mind taking a look at this photo? This was shot at iso of 400, aperature of 6.3 and shutter speed 1/200, it was overcast that day and it was shot with a 70-200mm f2.8L IS Canon lens, this was at 200mm. I shot in raw, and when I save it as a jpeg, i sometimes notice my colours don't always seem the same, its like it loses the edges or they become rounded. No idea whats going on, I'll have to look into it.

Not sure what kind of bird it is either, i found it while walking through a city in Germany (shoot this weekend)

Looks a tad underexposed on the darks

You will need to apply shrapening depending on what size you save it to, check the program you use to edit the raw data and see if its setting the sharpening for you. also, save in high quality when converting to jpeg

its a Muscovee

400exBro
02-10-2009, 11:17 AM
Okay i will look into that, I am using Photoshop CS4(any idea where that can be changed??), I usually have my light meter at exactly middle, but I have read that canons light meters are sometimes off. I will have to watch for that, mind you the lighting sucked that day, but you have to work with what you have.

edit:
okay I went up a little on the exposure on the raw settings

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_T95cmlvY0Xw/SZHGI_VkaaI/AAAAAAAAAZ8/79wV6nnWqig/s720/bird.jpg

Pappy
02-10-2009, 11:24 AM
On overcast days, add 1 to the contrast and 1 to saturation in camera settings.

CS4....when you import the image, you will have a chance to move teh slider for the sharpening or adjust it.
