heres the prob and i think i know what it might be but i dun wanna tear anything apart without having anything wrong first.

when my 400EX is warmed up and idling, i can hear a ticking sound comming from the engine. this must mean to me that my valves need to be reset/adjusted rite? if so, how do i do this? i have feeler guages i read somewhere i needed them. so i bought some. so is this probley my problem? and am i going to eed new gaskets or anything?

Adjust your valves. No gaskets necessary.

Its harder to take the plastic off than adjusting the valves. Good luck.:D

check the ex tech section, it tells you how to do it.

Make sure your feelers go down to .004 and .005 most dont.. and the tech sectio has a pretty good write up on how to do it... Be sure to follow the very important part about turning the motor (counterclockwise I think).

The 400 is noisy when it warms up. If it goes away, you are fine. Just let it warm up before you rod it. If it keeps doing it after it is warm, adjust them. If you have free time, check them for yourself, otherwise I would say they are fine.

make sure you motor is cold, don't adjust them if your motor is hot or warm

Well if its the valves they will start ticking as soon as you hit that start button, you'll hear it. Its a good idea to check them anyway cause a overly loose valve can cause loss in power ( and that nasty noise ) the valves being to tight can cause severe engine damage ( dont want that ).

Like it was said above, just taking the plastics off is the hard part heh.

BTW, Honda motors do have a faint ticking to them. I talked to my dealer. Hard to hear, but they do all have a common sound

a little ticking is ok, but mine was pretty loud on my 300ex. I adjusted the valves which didn't need any adjusting and continued to ride. my brother works at a car dealership and washed the quad there; when he started it up, the mechanic cae running over asking what the **** was that noise? He is an avid dirtbiker and 6 figure mechanic so he said he would do a little diagnostic check for free.

In the end it ended up being a loose wristpin which is now being replaced.

Good to hear. Theres a speed shop near me that is SOOOOOO close to doing quads. They do Trucks and imports now. Bussniess is starting to get slower and they are thinking about getting into ATVS!!!! :devil

The tapping that I have is pretty noticeable. Even the common no nothing about motors would notice it, i think I'm gunna call the dealer and have em do it again, if the did what they said the first time.

I don't think it should be a problem, mine makes the same fairly loud ticking noise when I fire it up cold. its just cause it takes a while for the cold oil to get moved around in your engine. as soon as my quad warms up a lil it stops and thats that. I suppose if yours ticked more than that that would be a problem, but otherwise I'd say don't worry about it.
p.s mine has done it since new (july last year)

Mine ticks when I start up. For about 30 seconds or so, but as soon as the oil starts to warm up and get pumped around the engine, it goes away. First time I heard it was after my break in tune-up at the dealer (which was free). I was a little suspicious, so I bought the shop manual and adjusted the valves myself. It still ticks, but only on a cold start-up. If I've been riding, and hop back on before it gets cold, it doesn't make any noise at all. I used to worry about it, but after tearing into the engine and looking at things, I am convinced that it's okay.
