It does not take gear oil. You can use (certain) automotive oils, but just stick with motorcycle oil to be safe ;)

But the standard viscosity the motor calls for is 10w40.

Agreed with the Rotella statement, it is a great oil...

For weights, if I run Mobil oil I run 20w-50 in the summer, and 10w-40 in winter.

i dont understand why people are running the 20w50 and adding more pressure on there oil pumps. i run 10w40 act evo castral oil

there is minimal stress added to these oil pumps with that weigh oil. you will never have these oil pumps go up on you cause of 20w-50 weigh, not to mention it says in the owners manual that you can use 20w-50, but the little bit of added stress and higher oil pressure is well worth the added protection of the heavier weight oil

I wouldn't run anything other than 20w-50 synthetic in the 400ex and change it often.

20w-50 is recommended for summer/hot weather riding... I'm sure 10w-40 works just as well, but why take the chance of it thinning out too much?

ive been running 20w-50 in my quad since the first day i got it 3 years ago and ive yet to have any over heating problems or anything. works great for me and i have noticed any difference in the oil pump to be honest.
