ive been looking for a good sprocket and chain combo... ive been looking on e-bay but most of their stuff looks like sh*t. cheap junk.... anyway i saw that the gearing is different on 05 with 14 front and 39 rear... is that a better setup then the older 15 front 38 rear and will the new chain and sprocket combo work with the old... help me know something...........

I just bought one of the cheap o ring chains on e-bay, and when I got it in the mail it was a KMC chain. They dont tell you what brand it is when you buy it.

you can spend 145 on an oring chain & sprockets and never take care of it.

or

you can spend $75 on a non-oring chain, take care of it, gain power to your rear wheels and last just as long.

Tensile strength should be your first concern.

KMC make some good chain, but you have to take care of them

sidewinder makes the worlds most strongest chains, i saw on there robbie kenevil uses a sidewinder on his bike there made of titanieum and nickle plated three times i think and the average tensil strength of a 520 chain is like 7500ish and they have some around 16000 but they cost around $200 and they also make sprockets, they say its the last one you'll ever need, check it out

the gearing can be swapped to either combo. There really isnt a "better" combo, Its all about your riding style. I run 13/39 but I do mostly trails, but with that combo you lose a lot of top speed. The kit on e-bay really is not bad, as long as u take care of it. I saw a kit for $75 shipped, and it came with an O-ring chain and both front and rear sprokets or A non o-ring chain with sprokets is $53 shipped.

what is the best sidewinder chain to run? the XP" Extreme Performance Chain or Titanium Chain or the smart chain?

the xp chain is for like every now and then extreme use and the titanium chain is what i believe is a all around non o ring chain for people with big time sponsors that can afford to replace once in a while cause its non o ring i think and the smart chain sounds like it would be the best to me with 16000 lb strength man! and it last twice as long than any other o ring chain, if i had the money i would get the smart chain

I run GP HD non-oring chains and aluminum rear sprockets. The chain boasts a 7250lb tensile strength and in a 130 link they run like $45.

They dont stretch.....and if you lube them after each ride theyll last you a couple of years.

Ive never broke one. Ive never wore out a rear sprocket either. I run BIG sprockets tho.....15 or 16 tooth front and 41-45 rear. The larger the sprocket, the more teeth and links are engaged and more load is spread across more area and less wear and tear on all the parts.

Those running in rocks would have to build a special skid plate to clear the big sprocket.

Non O ring adds 1hp. And if you go non O ring WD40 works fine you dont need chain wax.

I if you go with sidewinder titanium sprocket/chain kit for like $400 you gain like 4hp from what I seen in a mag with a ds650.

I liked 15/38 gearing with 18" mx tires on my 400ex. When I switched it to a hybrid I liked 13/39 with mx tires.

Tire size and where you ride determins whats best. I remember back in like 2004 or 2005 I switched from big heavy holeshot XCT 22" rears to light 18" holeshot MX tires and the speed dropped alot but it excelorated fasterer. I remember taking off and doing a wheelie cause it got so much more torqy feeling.
