Ordered a small container to apply after I sand everything down.

Check it out.

Used for model trains... I will post a review after I try..

My plastics are already painted with Krylon. I plan to remove all the old paint, the go with this

http://www.urethanesupply.com/atvpainting.php

Going to use plastic magic, then primer, sand and flex agent, putty etc. I have all the air tools for painting so should be under $100... May not be a bad way to revive old plastics! Maybe a small business in the future.. hmmm.

http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp330/Jarred27x/HPIM0354.jpg

Then I took self rising filler primer from walmart
http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp330/Jarred27x/HPIM0356.jpg

Then I used Krylon Industrial Osha red spray paint and dupilcolor(sp?) ruberized autobody paint for under it

Its not the best but I'm happy with it untill I can get new plastics

That looks extremely good!

Did you add any flex agent to the paint? Where did you get the duplicolor and krylon? All spray paint? What about a flex agent?

Here is a pic of mine, lots of dings that need to be filled. Did the self rising primer take care of the scratches? Did you have to sand after the primer?

I was thinking that black cat product would be good as a filler..

Also the article states add flex to your top coat, I would suspect this means base coat and not the clear coat.

I have all the spray guns, so I need advice on clear and base (color) coat that I can get for a spray gun...

Well to anwser you: No I did not use a flex agent. I got everything at walmart except the Krylon Industrial osha paint at napa auto store, the self rising primer fills in all scraches and I used 800 grit to sand after two coats. and yes all rattle can I did it the cheapo way.

I'm sure the black cat would be great but It might be a waste of money

Ok now the best way I know how to do it is:

Wet sand 500-600 grit

Get an adhesion promotor like bulldog or duplicolor adhesion promotor.(can find at autozone)

http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp330/Jarred27x/51K34EKRRML_SL500_AA280_1.jpg

Then use autobody paint (find at most auto stores)

http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp330/Jarred27x/rep-paintshop1.jpg

Then a autobody ployurathan(sp?) clear coat (find at most auto stores)

end result

Hope this helps any

it does help..

I started to take off the many layers of Krylon I have (approx 8 over 6 months 2 dif colors) and high gloss clear.

I actually used easy off oven cleaner to start. Would take a whole bunch to get it done but you could see it starting to work.

i have a professional spray gun I plan to use...

Everything on this post helps.. I will take detailed pics over my vaca and let you know how it works out.

Thanks!

Dan

So I applied the chameleon product, and let it sit covered for about 2 hours.. Went inside to the utility sink and used a bristle brush (the kind you clean the bathroom with)..

I am pleased with the initial results. Of course a lot of sanding will be needed, but it took off about 5 coats of krylon, and heavy poly (used as my clear)...

I have a lot of work ahead of me.. I tried just plain old sanding with a hand sander and it took FOREVER... soo this will be the best bang for the buck ($20 16oz) should be enough to cover everything.

If it wasnt 20 below outside I would pressure wash.. maybe I will apply and take a ride to the local auto spray place..

anyway, you can see the black left on.. and traces of the original where decals once were (flames).

FYI, do this stuff outside only.. Fumes are still burning my eyes.. And I did it in a good sized laundry room (for scrub and rinse maybe 10 min)...

Yes, I am a royal dumb @ss for doing that.. I know.

Ok,
I applied the product on the rest of the plastics, placed a small heater in the garage overnight and today went to the local spary wash (sorry for the mess guys)

I packed everything in plastic bags to keep the product moist. My overall impression is the Chameleon product is AWESOME for removing paint.

So to all you Krylon guys who dont feel like taking 900 hours to sand everything off. Do yourself a favor and buy this $20 16oz bottle.

I have attached a couple of pics, before (pic in this thread), sanding and the crappy job it did (next post) and the final is after applying the paint removal product and $5 at a spray wash... came out very clean. I still have some minor spots to hit, but nothing major.

second is my attempt to sand, about 30 min with 150 grit

and the final result (24 hour "soak" and spray wash)

you are on the right track with the painting process. i would suggest to you first that as for a primer you should either use "bumper cladding and adhesion promoter" (just one item not 2 seperate ones)
or use the plastic majic as mentioned and then use black cat primer. You can order both of them from Urethane supply company. I would use a higher grade paint than duplicolor. Go ahead and get you some ppg or heck even some cheap automotive paint mixed up from napa or something.
Ive done a few to say the least.
Give me a shout via email for more details, I have strict orders to keep stuff off the boards.
ill send you a pm with my email addy.

Well I am done..

1 can of cleaner degrease stuff
1 can of adhesion promoter
2 cans of primer self rising filler
1 can of primer sealer paint
4 cans of burgundy perl

Used every can, so many coats throughout the day...

Final product.. turned out nice.. remember my "canvas" is from 1987... but all in all came out well. I am pleased.

Next step is 3m plastic to cover and protect (just like the cars) also a seat cover is in order

More pics, This one pre clear coat. You can still see the scratches from all the years, believe it or not, this is 10000 times better.

i have a polaris that is original and faded from red to pink. i work at a body shop but have never painted a atv fender set with anything other than rattle cans.

can i just sand smooth with like 80 grit to get the scratches out, then 180 and last 400 to get it smooth, then cover with epoxy primer to make it stick, wet sand for smoothness and base coat real good and use regular urethane clear? these fenders have racks and good supports so i don't think that the bending fenders will be a problem.

think this will work?
thanks

Hey,
Not sure about the 80 grit sand out, it may pit to much. Check out this link http://www.urethanesupply.com/atvpainting.php

They fill in any scratches after the primer and primer sealer with a flexible filler other than bondo. I skipped this step, only had about 5 hours to complete the project and rushed through it a bit.

Before the primer go with a good cleaner then 2-3 coats of adhesion promoter with 3-4 min inbetween coats... Being that you work at a body shop, I would say treat it like a bumper repair.

Why dont you like pink plastics? ;)

if you want it to last you need to use the black cat primer and follow instructions from urethane supply company on prepping other wise. i paint mine every year to "keep up with the jones" and i ride in every kind of condition there is.

http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j198/uthnkunome27/mephotoshop.jpg

and this is the latest scheme. This was during the process but before i put them on.

Does it have to be black cat primer? I went with all duplicolor based off the directions etc.

the black cat primer is extremely flexible and works wonderful on atv plastics. Yes mine has the black cat primer on them. I paint mine myself so it cost me materials.

Did you cover it in 3m plastic yet?

dbc112
01-13-2009, 12:32 PM
Not yet.. It is actually on pretty good. I scratched it around trying to get everything buttoned on. Hit the rod near the front used to anchor the plastics on... not a mark. So I may be ok..

BTW, check this out on google maps satellite

Fidler Hill Rd woodbine NJ..

check the satellite view my buddy and I are going in the beginning of march. It is near a park they stay in the summer.. Looks SWEET.
