Shock setup question

This probably sounds like a dumb question but I haven't been able to get a definitive answer - what type of "feel" is a shock setup for desert vs. XC vs. MX? I guess what I'm trying to understand is what valving type will be the most plush, what one has the most bottom-out resistance, etc. From what I understand, it seems XC is the softest where MX is the stiffest, and I don't know where desert falls. Can someone tell me for sure?

That's kind of what I figured as far as where a desert setup would fit into the spectrum but I still would like to know about feel - how does a XC valve compare to MX in terms of plushness and how do the shocks react? I imagine XC is stiff on top and soft near the end of the travel where MX is soft of top and stiffer down low to prevent bottoming-out?
